Tampa Bay Downs Selections for April 19, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

We’re back at Tampa Bay Downs after splitting our two selections on Saturday. We found a winner in Race 1 with My Boy Lenny. It was his third straight win to complete the hat-trick. It was a wire-to-wire win with no competition from the rest of the field. That’s the way we like them. Nice and easy win. If you are looking for our Rainbow Pick 6 selections at Gulfstream Park, we also have an overview of our six picks. The top prize for a unique ticket could net $5 million. As unlikely as it is, the thrill of potentially winning that much money with a bet for less than a cup of coffee is intriguing.

Racing continues to power on in Florida, as Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields on the opposite side of the country wait to see what’s happening. They’re still pressing, especially Santa Anita Park, to be able to race again. Opening up to the public is out of the question, but they’d be fine with that if the horses could just race again. It’s put several trainers and owners in a tough spot. They have to adapt right now, while they hope for some good news in the meantime. Tampa Bay Downs will have a nine-horse race scheduled for Sunday in Florida. Head below for our free Tampa Bay Downs selections for April 19, 2020.

Race 1

(1) Tenerife Moon
+1000 (10/1)
(2) Merengue
+250 (5/2)
(3) Flatout Screaming
+600 (6/1)
(4) Pink Peppermint

(5) Margie’s Rouxbee
+1000 (10/1)
(6) Lady Denisse
+1200 (12/1)
(7) Tessie’s Red Sox
+3000 (30/1)
(8) Discramination
+3000 (30/1)

Post Time: 12:40 EST
Distance: 6 Furlongs

There are some big underdogs hanging out on one side of the gate in Race 1. With the No. 8, 7, 6, and 5 horses all priced +1000 or more on the morning lines. Discrimanation is likely to close as the biggest underdog at post time. Not to be confused with Discrimination from the 2000’s, Discrimanation is still searching for his first win in his 19th race on Sunday. Not only that, Discrimanation hasn’t even placed yet.

He showed once on November 16, 2019 and that’s it for success. Discrimanation has finished 12th, 10th, 8th, 11th, and 6th in his previous five races. Owning a racehorse for a lot of people is just a hobby, well this better only be a hobby for the ownership group because he’s made only $5,395 since his debut in 2018. Tessie’s Red Sox has not notched a win thus far, but has appeared in only 7 races and has a couple of showings at least.

She showed on March 31, 2019 and January 29, though hasn’t in three straight outings with finishes of 5th, 10th, and 7th. Over on the other side of the gate, Tenerife Moon on the rail is not the most highly favored pony in Race 1. She has raced in three events and has had no success so far. Tenerife finished 9th, 11th, and 9th. In her most recent outing on April 5 , Tenerife Moon was 9th at 1-mile, finishing ahead of only one other participant.

Pink Peppermint and Merengue are both likely going to be in good form on Sunday. Merengue had a poor debut on March 13, but responded with a positive performance on April 1 to place 2nd behind the leader by 2 ¼ lengths. She was 1st from the ¼ pole to the ⅜ mark, but slipped back to lose in the homestretch.

Merengue is expected to be involved at the wire in this one. However, she faces stiff competition versus Pink Peppermint. Pink Peppermint was 6th in her last two events, though will not be tested as much against these opponents in Race 1. And keep in mind that Pink Peppermint was competitive in both races before fading back in 1-mile and 1 1/16 mile races.

She was 3rd at the ½ pole before falling in her last race. Expect Pink Peppermint to look much better at a shorter distance today. In her debut, she ran 6 furlongs and looked great to place in 2nd. I’m confident in backing her at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday.

Race 4

(1) Russian Roulette
+800 (15/1)
(2) Lady’s Island
-125 (4/5)
(3) Nikki Bella
+1200 (12/1)
(4) J’s Indian Charm
+600 (6/1)
(5) Suzie’ssteppinout
+500 (5/1)
(6) Caught Up in You
+600 (6/1)
(7) Starship Reina
+1500 (15/1)

Post Time: 2:15 EST
Distance:6 Furlongs

Seven horses are signed up to run 6 furlongs in Race 4 for a $18,700 purse on Sunday at Tampa Bay Downs. We have two sizable underdogs in this one, but nobody really sticks out as a horse that would net you a huge payout. Starship Reina will look for the upset from the No. 7 post. She has been around the track a few times, with 51 races in her career, with 11 of them resulting in wins. The last win for Starship Reina was back on September 12, 2019, though she hasn’t shown in five races since. She should find herself overmatched in this trip to the gate.

Nikki Bella is going to be your best bet for an upset in Race 4. She is stepping up against better competition, but has been hanging in there recently. Nikki Bella has shown in eight out of her last nine races and placed in seven of them. She is a winner in 4 out of 20 races. Finished 2nd in her most recent race on March 20 behind Dreaming Diamonds by 4 ¼ lengths. Russian Roulette is coming off a similar outing, as she finished 2nd on March 20 to get beaten out by a neck.

Suzie’ssteppinout was able to edge Russian Roulette out in that race. That was an easy field to navigate for Suzie’ssteppinout, with her greatest threat, Russian Roulette, coming up short at the wire. She has won 7 out of 25 races in her career and could give the horses a good horse in this event. Six horses in Race 4 are going to be up against a very big wall coming out of the No. 2 post on Sunday.

Lady’s Island has been an absolute juggernaut and 6-year-old to be fearful of at Tampa Bay Downs, Gulfstream Park, and Saratoga. Lady’s Island has placed in 11 straight races and 12 out of her previous 13 outings. Note that ten of those races included wins. She has taken a trip to the winner’s circle in 14 out of 28 races for an excellent win percentage of 50%.

That’s incredibly difficult to achieve in 28 races. She smashed the competition in her last event, the Minaret Stakes on February 15. Lady’s Island took the lead at the ¼ pole and cruised to a win by 2 lengths over Into Chocolate. She’s been in terrific form since late 2018 and should continue to roll on Sunday. The class of the field and should be featured by the competition. Expect Lady’s Island to get the win to get above .500 in her career.
