Horse racing slows down a notch on Sunday after a big stakes racing day on Saturday. There wasn’t anything bigger than a $200,000 race, but could find a stakes event pretty well any racecourse you handicapped. That said, there’s still plenty of racing on Sunday, including some big tracks like Aqueduct Racetrack and Santa Anita Park. We have Aqueduct covered with three picks on Sunday. If you are looking for additional selections today, then check out the Aqueduct Racetrack page for more information. You don’t have to go to the big name racetracks to find winners, though. Tampa Bay Downs doesn’t host the biggest races in the country, but I’ve had success playing the ponies in Tampa. We’re in Tampa at Tampa Bay Downs looking for winning horses.
Tampa Bay Downs has ten races scheduled worth a total of $161,300 on Sunday. Let’s see if we can leave Tampa with two or three winning horses on Sunday afternoon in Florida. Head below for our free Tampa Bay Downs picks for January 17, 2021.

Distance:6 ½ Furlongs
Race 3 will get us started at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday afternoon. This event covers 6 ½ furlongs for a $13,350 purse. Rogue Rage and Strum and Pluck should be involved in the stretch. They are expected to come close to a win in this one. Rogue Rage is winless in ten-career races, but came close a couple of times recently. He placed 2nd behind Disturbingthepeace by 2 ¾ lengths in a $18,000 assignment on October 15, and then followed up to do the same, but this was in a $12350 outing.
The drop in class expected to get Rogue Rage into the winner’s circle, but it wasn’t meant to be. In his most recent appearance, Disturbingthepeace finished 4th in a $13,350 race. Expect him to be close if he can revert back to form. However, based on the most recent form, Disturbingthepeace will need an extra kick to get into the winner’s circle. Strum and Puck is one horse that has the talent to clear Disturbingthepeace with ease if he wants to run today.
Strum and Pluck has finished 7th, 6th, 3rd, 4th, 2nd in his career. He is coming off the best outing of his career, having placed 2nd on December 27 ahead of Rogue Rage by two spots. Strum and Pluck was 5 lengths ahead of Rogue Rage at the wire. His workouts have been in good order, and should do the same against Rogue Rage if he shows up to perform on Sunday. I’d lean towards Strum and Pluck getting the win on Sunday.

Race 7 is our second of two picks at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday. This is a 6-furlong event for a $14,350 purse. Workinonbeinsingle and Gilded Lady are horses you are going to want to watch in this event. Workinonbeinsingle gets the inside rail out of the gate and will likely use it to her advantage.
She has shown improvement through her brief career. Workinonbeinsingle has finished 7th, 5th, 3rd, so she has been creeping towards the front. In her most recent outing, Workinonbeinsingle showed 3rd for the first time with a nice performance in a $13,350 assignment on Christmas Eve.
She is a progressive filly that could continue to improve on Sunday. If that’s the case, then expect to see Workinonbeinsingle with a chance to score in the stretch. In her most recent workout on January 9, she looked good with a time of 49 seconds at 4 furlongs. Gilded Lady is the one that can likely stop her, though.
Gilded Lady has gone 5th, 5th, 2nd, 6th, which doesn’t look like much. However, she is sliding in class and distance and should benefit nicely from that. Gilded Lady placed 2nd behind Trapped N My Mind on August 23 after being disqualified.
She won the race by a half length, but was DQ’d because of interference in the stretch. This was for a $20,500 purse. In her most recent effort, Gilded Lady finished 6th in a $25,000 race. Down in class on Sunday, expect Gilded Lady to be the runner to beat in Race 7.
