Thistledown Selections for April 27, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

Thistledown Selections for April 27, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

For a Tuesday, we can’t ask for much more than six racecourses on the docket. That includes Churchill Downs, which is gearing up for the 147th Kentucky Derby on Saturday in Louisville. In seconds the race is over, but the Kentucky Derby isn’t the only big stakes race to pay attention to on Saturday. There is a big card at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. You can find a total of $3,829,000 in prize money available at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The day before the Kentucky Derby is always a treat as well. The running of the Kentucky Oaks (Gr. 1) is scheduled for 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt on Friday afternoon in Louisville. Last year if you recall, Shedaresthedevil won in a big upset over Swiss Skydiver and Gamine.

We have three selections at Churchill Downs on Tuesday afternoon. There’s a $130,000 stakes race, but nothing compared to what we’re going to see soon. In our second card on Tuesday, we’re at Thistledown for the first time in 2021. Thistledown is a Cleveland based track that just opened its spring meet this week. There are eight races at Thistledown on Tuesday with $142,800 in prize money. Head below for our free Thistledown picks for April 27, 2021.

Post Time: 2:20 p.m. EST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$15,400

For a $15,400 purse in Race 4, we have a mile of racing on the dirt. Six horses are signed up to race in Race 4. Golden Afleet and Spin Doctor should have a strong presence in this event. Golden Afleet is a winner in 6 out of 52 attempts in his career. In his most recent win, Golden Afleet won back on June 4, 2020 in Cleveland. Golden Afleet has been close since then, but short in 18 straight events.

He’s gone 5th, 7th, 4th, 2nd in his previous four outings. Golden Afleet is coming off a productive run on April 7 to place 2nd behind West Leonard by a half length for a $20,400 purse. That was a close call for Golden Afleet, and he’s moving down to a $15,400 event on Tuesday. If he can hold that form and bring it to the party on Tuesday, then Golden Afleet should be close at the wire. Spin Doctor should provide a nice challenge for Golden Afleet.

Spin Doctor is 4 for 21 in his career, and hasn’t won since running at Thistledown. Spin Doctor has had a lot of success in Cleveland, with his most recent win on October 12. He beat City Volume by 1 length in a $14,900 assignment in that performance. After finishing in the top-2 in six of seven events, Spin Doctor moved up in class and didn’t have as much success at Indiana Grand. Back at Thistledown, and down in class, look for Spin Doctor to find his winning groove again.

(4) Eskendulce

(6) Strike Appeal
+350 (7/2)
(7) Levanto
+500 (5/1)

Post Time: 3:50 p.m. EST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$19,000

In a $19,000 event covering a mile on the main track, seven horses will compete for the top prize in Race 7. Eskendulce and Strike Appeal are expected to run close in the stretch in this race. Eskendulce is 19 for 62 in his career with some consistency recently. He has finished 2nd and 1st in his last two attempts. Eskendulce placed 2nd behind Gizmo Jones by 4 ½ lengths in a $15,000 event.

He was able to do one better in his next performance on April 10. Eskendulce defeated Eight Ain’t Enough by 3 lengths for a $18,000 purse. In five of his previous seven performances, Eskendulche has been in the top-2. Staying in the same class on Tuesday, expect Eskendulce to have a strong chance of striking on Tuesday afternoon.

Strike Appeal is 5 for 16 in his career with some nice runs recently. He has been in good form recently going 1st, 6th, 1st, 1st, 2nd in his previous five outings. Strike Appeal won a couple of races on February 9 in a $18,000 event by 1 ¼ lengths, and then followed up for another win on March 1 in another $18,000 race by 1 length over Last Drop of Wine.

Strike Appeal most recently placed 2nd behind Maximizer by a neck in a $22,500 event. That was a tougher event, but Strike Appeal handled it well. He came close in that performance, but heading back down to a $19,000 assignment on Tuesday. I’d expect a good run from Strike Appeal in this one. The value is most certainly on his side.

Race 8

(1) Count Brian
+800 (8/1)
(2) Foreverjumbonmike
+450 (9/2)
(3) Funny Bachelor
+300 (3/1)
(4) Armada
+250 (5/2)
(5) Flat Out of Credit
+350 (7/2)
(6) Chocolate Philling
+600 (6/1)

Post Time: 4:20 p.m. EST
Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
Purse:$30,000

Race 8 is a $30,000 event covering 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Funny Bachelor and Armada are going to be tough runners to beat in this race. Funny Bachelor has finished 7th, 11th, 5th, 2nd in his career. He is coming off the best run of his career to place 2nd in a $16,400 event.

Funny Bachelor finished 10 lengths behind Dream Prizes to earn place money for the first time in his career. He wasn’t close to the winner, but his connections will take the $3,280 in prize money. Funny Bachelor is going up in class, though the competition in this event doesn’t look too difficult.

Armada should be one of the best to run in Race 8 on Tuesday afternoon. He is coming off back-to-back events where Armada showed 3rd on March 22 and April 12. Armada showed in a $20,000 and $27,500 event. He has the most experience running in events near this class and should run well. Expect a bold bid from Armada in the stretch with a good chance of leading at the wire.
