The Preakness Stakes is less than two weeks away on October 3. The field continues to grow, with Jesus’ Team the most recent addition to the Preakness field. Mr. Big News, who was a 46/1 underdog in the Kentucky Derby, is expected to participate in the Preakness Stakes as well. Mr. Big News moved into the top-3 with that performance to grab a piece of the Derby purse. That was more than expected for his connections. Just going to the Derby was enough of a treat for Mr. Big News. Now he moves on to another competitive field at Pimlico.
Nothing has changed with regard to Tiz the Law yet. We should get word from Barclay Tagg sometime this week. Tiz the Law has a scheduled breezing session and he’ll go from there. Kentucky Derby winner, Authentic, looked fantastic on Saturday on the workout trail. He was running in good form with a smooth 5-furlong trek. That seems to have peaked at the perfect time for Bob Baffert.
Monday has a small card, but good enough to put a dent into the board for some winners. For our Monday look at horse racing, we will be at Thistledown in Cleveland. Thistledown is putting on an eight-race card for $111,000 in prize money. Head below for our free Thistledown picks for September 21, 2020.

A modest purse of $9,300 will get us started at Thistledown on Monday afternoon at Thistledown. Cosi Momosi and Chit Chatting are the ones to watch and should be a factor in the stretch. Cosi Momosi has been in good form with finishes of 1st, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 2nd in her previous four entries. She’s placed 2nd in her last two outings for purses of $9,300. After those respectable performances, Cosi Momosi will stay in the same class hoping to do one better on Monday.
Cosi Momosi was close in both races, having lost by 3 ¼ lengths and a head. Expect her to play this race close with a chance to win. Chit Chatting is back down at a winnable level after showing nothing in her last race on September 8. She finished 7th in the $23,000 event, though was far more competitive running for a $10,700 and $8,900 purse. She placed 2nd in the $10,700 race on July 21 by a half length, and won by 4 ¾ lengths for a $8,900 purse on June 11.
Both horses are going to show something in this race. I think it comes down to who carries the better value by post time. According to the morning-line, Cosi Momosi is getting plenty of value. Cosi Momosi just won back-to-back events in June at the $10,300 and $11,500 level. The $11,500 win was a blowout, with Cosi Momosi clearing the field by 10 ¾ lengths. A better chance of victory for Cosi Momosi than 9/2 should be in the cards.

The feature race of the day is Race 5 at Thistledown. It will go off for a $23,000 purse on Monday afternoon, covering a mile on the dirt. A six-horse field is expected to participate here. Chief Randel and Going With Style are on my shortlist for Race 5.
Chief Randel has been a consistent producer recently to finish in the top-2 in five straight races. That includes a win in the $75,000 Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup Stakes (Black Type) on June 27. Since then, Chief Randal has gone 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd.
In his most recent performance, Chief Randel placed 2nd in the $50,000 Robert G. Leavitt Stakes on August 28. Overall, Chief Randel is 4 for 14 in his career, and is expected to run another strong race today.
It would be a surprise if Chief Randel doesn’t play a role in the stretch. He does have tough company versus the No. 5 horse, Going With Style. Going With Style is running hot right now and is looking to add his fourth win since July.
Going With Style has won three straight races, most recently on September 7 over Pat’s Karma by 1 ¾ lengths for a $21,500 purse. Prior to that win, Going With Style won in a blowout by 11 lengths over Midnite Thunder for a $24,100 purse. Midnite Thunder was an overwhelming 0.05 favorite by post time. You would have won pennies for betting on that horse.
Chief Randel is going to be a strong horse from the drop in class. However, Going With Style isn’t going to go away in the stretch. I will take Going With Style to pull off a mini upset over Chief Randel in Race 5.

Distance:1 Mile 40 Yards
One more selection for us at Thistledown before turning out the lights on Monday afternoon. Race 7 will run a mile and 40 yards for a $21,500 purse. Candy Exchange and Speedy Mobile will be on my watchlist going into the day. Speedy Mobile has finished in the top-3 in 5 of 6 races from July to September. He’s coming off two serviceable runs on August 25 and September 7.
Speedy Mobile placed 2nd behind Classic Mo by 1 ½ lengths in a $20,300 event on August 25. He followed up to show 3rd in a $21,500 race on September 7. Overall, Speedy Mobile has won 10 of 48 races in his career. He’s going to be a factor in this race, but going to have it tough in the stretch versus a competitive field. His most recent win was back on July 4. Speedy Mobile beat Doctoriat by 9 lengths in a $14,600 event. Since that win, he’s finished 3rd, 2nd, 4th, 2nd, 3rd.
Candy Exchange is 8 for 35 in his career and has been in good form as well. He has finished in the top-3 in five straight performances, and top-3 in 7 of his last 9. Candy Exchange is coming off a showing for 3rd on August 25 for a $20,300 purse. That was a disappointing run for Candy Exchange as the betting favorite. Speedy Mobile had Candy Exchange by a half length in that race. If Candy Exchange runs his race on Monday, he should be able to emerge ahead of Speedy Mobile this time for the win.
