Thistledown Selections for September 29, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

Thistledown was a success on Monday afternoon, as we found two winning horses to provide us with a winning day in Cleveland. This has been one of my most profitable tracks in the country, so why not take another look at Thistledown on Tuesday afternoon. It could have been better if we achieved a sweep, but we’ll take the two winners and move on to the next day. Thistledown has $122,300 on offer across eight races on Tuesday. That’s about average for a Thistledown card. You can always depend on Thistledown having eight races on the schedule.

In Preakness Stakes news, Authentic has opened as a 9/5 favorite to win and complete back-to-back wins. Authentic is of course the winner of the 146th Kentucky Derby. It was a delayed win for Bob Baffert following the postponement of the event, but it’s nevertheless another Kentucky Derby win to put on his mantle. He can add to his impressive accolades with yet another with a win in the Preakness this weekend. It may not be as easy as many people believe. Head below for our free Thistledown picks for September 29, 2020.

Post Time: 1:20p.m. EST
Distance:1 Mile 40 Yards
Purse:$16,400

Race 2 is a battle of some pretty nice horses. Six runners are scheduled to run for a $16,400 purse across a mile and 40 yards on the dirt. Market Success and Three Illusion are on my shortlist, with an honorable mention to Colorincolonel from the No. 1 post position.

Market Success is 6 for 28 in her career and has been in the best form of her career recently. She is coming off a win in her latest outing and has three of them in her previous four performances.

She has gone 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st in her last four. In her most recent win, Market Success was the best horse by 1 ¾ lengths in that $21,500 event. Two weeks prior to that win, she fell by ¾ lengths in a $16,100 race. This is certainly a winnable class for Market Success.

In her wins on July 29 and August 25, Market Success was a winner by 2 ¼ lengths in a $14,900 race and 3 ¾ lengths at the same level. She will face a lot of heat from Three Illusions, who will be looking to get back to the winner’s circle after having her five-race winning streak coming to an end.

Three Illusions was on a monster roll before coming 2 ¼ lengths for a $16,400 purse on September 8. Prior to that loss, Three Illusions was a 1 length winner in this same class. And prior to that, Three Illusions won in a romp by 15 ¾ lengths over Flat Out Smokin. This has the makings of a duel in the stretch. Look for Three Illusions to get back to her winning ways with an edge over Market Success at the wire.

The Bet
(2) THREE ILLUSIONS

Race 4

(1) Junior Gilliam
+350 (7/2)
(2) The Lone Roo
+1000 (10/1)
(3) Highland Park Hero
+450 (9/2)
(4) Smokin Hot Energy
+800 (8/1)
(5) Lovely Heir
+250 (5/2)
(6) Super Beau
+1200 (12/1)
(7) Astro Jak
+600 (6/1)
(8) Beautiful Game
+600 (6/1)

Post Time: 2:20 p.m. EST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse:$11,300

Race 4 carries a $11,300 purse for 6 furlongs of racing on the dirt. Eight horses are scheduled to run in this event. Beautiful Game and Lovely Heir should give solid efforts in this one. Beautiful Game looks like he could have some nice value on his side Tuesday afternoon. He has been in nice form to finish in the top-3 in nine straight performances. Beautiful Game won on March 18 by ¾ lengths over Makes Good Sense at 6 furlongs for a $10,300 purse.

Since then, Beautiful Game has gone 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd. In his most recent performance, Beautiful Game placed 2nd in a $11,000 event on September 9. He wasn’t able to win, but was good enough to defeat five challengers. Overall, Beautiful Game is 6 for 35 in his career and is in pretty nice form right now. He’s certainly a better horse than the 6/1 morning-line indicates.

Lovely Heir is 9 for 23 in his career and has gone 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd in his previous four performances. He won back-to-back races in July, and then followed up to place 2nd in back-to-back outings. In his most recent victory, Lovely Heir dispatched Zulu Legend by a head at the wire on July 21. That was following a 2 ¼ length win over Magical Express a couple of weeks earlier. Lovely Heir took over at the ¼ pole and didn’t look back from there. Expect a competitive race in the stretch, with Lovely Heir pulling away late.

The Bet
(5) LOVELY HEIR

Race 5

(1) Double Deep
+600 (6/1)
(2) Totellyouthetruth
+250 (5/2)
(3) Make the Call
+350 (7/2)
(4) It’s Official
+300 (3/1)
(5) Attack Angle
+600 (6/1)
(6) Wizard Willie
+1000 (10/1)
(7) Private Drive
+800 (8/1)

Post Time: 2:50 p.m. EST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse:$21,500

Race 5 is one of the biggest events at Thistledown on Tuesday afternoon. A purse of $21,500 will be offered for 6 furlongs of racing in this race. Double Deep and Tellyouthetruth should have a good chance at the top prize in this one. Double Deep is catching decent odds on the morning-line at 6/1.

He’s in fine form recently with results of 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st in his last five entries. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. In his career, Double Deep has gone 8 for 36 since debuting in 2017. Double Deep won by 2 ¼ lengths in his most recent outing over Beautiful Game in a $11,000 event.

This is a step up in class for Double Deep, so it could prove to be too tough of a challenge. However, he’s been in good form and might be able to pull off a mini upset against this competition. I certainly wouldn’t write off It’s Official in this race either. This horse has stakes experience, with an appearance in the $75,000 Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup Stakes (Black Type) on June 27.

It didn’t go according to plan with It’s Official finishing 6th, but no one in this race has participated in tougher races than him. Before that outing, It’s Official went 2nd, 3rd, 1st, and after the stakes race, It’s Official went 3rd and 1st. In his most recent outing, It’s Official was a ¾ length winner in a $31,700 event at 6 furlongs.

Note that It’s Official has been in the top-3 in 8 out of 10 races, which includes placing 2nd in the $75,000 Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes (Black Type). Despite the best of resumes, It’s Official has the best in this field and has faced much better competition in the past, even finding success like in his most recent showing on September 5 to win a $31,700 race. I think there should be some value with this horse at post time.
