Turf Paradise Selections for March 16, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

There are four more cards at BetOnline on Tuesday, with Turf Paradise, Delta Downs, Louisiana Downs, and Parx all back on the schedule. Louisiana has been dominating the early week action with Louisiana Downs and Delta Downs both racing on Mondays and Tuesdays during this time of the year. Delta Downs has the thoroughbreds covered, while Louisiana Downs is currently in the midst of a quarter horse meet.

We’re back at Delta Downs for a multi-race card after dominating the slate with a sweep on Monday. I’m allergic to Parx, so I’m not even entertaining the racing in Philadelphia. I will stick with Delta Downs and Turf Paradise on Tuesday. If you are looking for a big race, you’ll have to wait for Saturday with the running of the $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. I will have a Kentucky Derby preview on the blog Monday following that prep race.

Turf Paradise has ten races on the card today, with a total of $120,600 in prize money available. If you are looking for horse racing picks on Tuesday, check out our Delta Downs page. Head below for our free Turf Paradise picks for March 16, 2021.

Post Time: 1:52 p.m. PST
Distance:7 ½ Furlongs
Purse:$16,300

Race 2 covers 7 ½ furlongs for a $16,300 purse. Oculus and Squared Straight could get into a tight battle in the stretch for the top prize in this race. Oculus is winless in his career and has struggled to get on track, but a class drop is likely what he needs.

He has finished 8th, 8th, 8th, 8th, 6th, 8th which sounds absolutely terrible, and it is, but a transfer from Santa Anita Park should do Oculus a world of good. In his most recent showing, Oculus finished 8th in a $61,000 event. All the way down to a $16,300 race on Tuesday, expect him to compete at this level.

Squared Straight is winless as well and has experience running at Santa Anita Park and Del Mar, too. He showed 3rd in each of his last two performances on February 2 and February 18. In the first of those two outings, Squared Straight showed 3rd for a $16,300 race.

Squared Straight came back a couple of weeks later to run a similar race for 3rd. After weakening in both races late, this should suit him a lot better, though. He moves down in distance from a mile to 7 ½ furlongs. Before Oculus starts showing some signs of life, I’d stay away even in this class, but should run a much better race than we’ve seen before. I’m on Squared Straight to edge out Oculus.

Post Time: 2:20 p.m. PST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$15,000

Our selection selection at Turf Paradise on Tuesday is a mile race for a $15,000 purse. Six horses are expected to compete, with Unleash the Beast and Top of the Game held in high regard in this event. Unleash the Beast is 8 for 45 in his career and has been running in fine form recently.

He’s gone winless in five straight events, and looking to get back to his winning ways after going 5th, 6th, 2nd, 6th, 3rd in his previous five performances. In his latest outing, Unleash the Beast showed 3rd in a $15,000 event on February 23. This was after a tough performance for Unleash the Beast, finishing 6th in a $13,500 event.

Top of the Game is 13 for 40 in his career and was on a roll from January 7 to February 3 with three wins. In his most recent win, Top of the Game beat Five Star Kip by 4 ¾ lengths in a $15,000 event. It was a nice effort from Top of the Game in that one, but failed to make it four wins in a row on February 24. He finished 8th in that race after showing no interest in running. If Top of the Game wants to run on Tuesday, a win shouldn’t be out of reach in this one.

Post Time: 5:36 p.m. PST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse:$8,500

In the final race at Turf Paradise on Tuesday, we have a 6-furlong race for a $8,500 purse. 12 horses are slated to run in this event, with Redaction and Union Brother on my shortlist to win. Redaction is a one-time winner in ten attempts, but hasn’t won since his second start on July 5. He’s gone 4th, 8th, 2nd, 4th in his previous four performances.

Redaction placed 2nd behind Great Ulysses by 6 ½ lengths on February 3 in a $8,500 event. That was a nice try, but he regressed to 4th in his next outing on March 5 in a similar race. Union Brother was in that race and ran better than Redaction, placing 2nd in that same race. Union Brother has been stuck on 2nd for three straight races.

In his most recent showing, Union Brother placed 2nd behind Bean and the Bug in another $8,500 race. He keeps coming close, but breaks have unfortunately not been going his way with all of these close calls. If there is any race where he has the best chance to win, it has to be on Tuesday against this field. Besides Union Brother, no one has been in consistent form recently. If everything holds the same, expect Union Brother to finally break through for a win.
