It was another profitable baseball day at thesportsgeek.com with a nice 2-0 record on a pair of runline wagers on a high scoring (as predicted here) Saturday afternoon in major league baseball. It runs our early season record to a nice 9-2 with a $636 units profitability for $100 bettors. It might be a little unrealistic to think we’ll finish the long season at 80+%, but I’ll do my best to keep finding good VALUE wagers on a daily basis.
That said, as nice as our first week has been it pales in comparison to the first week for Clayton Kershaw. The reason? We’ve been good. Kerhsaw has been PERFECT. He extended his scoreless inning streak to 15 innings to start the season and is a flawless 2-0 with 16 strikeouts, no walks and only 6 hits allowed. If you are scoring at home, that equates to a WHIP of just under 0.40. Not a bad start…
Add in the shutout the night before by newly acquired Zach Greinke and all of a sudden this Dodger team is looking downright scary for the rest of the National League…
Today should be a good day across MLB, as most teams are playing their sixth game which means most teams will have their opening day starters back on the hill. Just look at some of these pitching matchups today: Lester vs. Dickey, Sabathia vs. Verlander, Strasburg vs. Cueto, Yu Darvish vs. Jared Weaver; it is going to be an awesome day of baseball. But will the big time pitchers hold up their end of the bargain and keep runs to a minimum tonight??
Let’s take a look at a few of the better lines on today’s busy slate of great games.
Pittsburgh Pirates +138 at Los Angeles Dodgers -145 (Total: 7.5)
Jeff Locke vs. Hyun-Jin Ryu
In a day full of great games, this probably isn’t one of them, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t a nice wagering opportunity today. The 7.5 total feels a little low to me, considering Locke is making his first start of the year against a powerful Dodger lineup on the road, and the Pirates, who have yet to score a run this weekend, won’t scuffle forever. Kershaw and Greinke shut them down, but I like them to get a few across the dish in this afternoon’s series finale.
The Dodgers have won eight straight games against the Pirates and have completely dominated the Pirates this season. I expect them to avoid getting shutout tonight, but the Dodgers have a nice favorable line at just -145.
Free Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers to WIN -145 & Run TOTAL OVER 7.5 (-105)
Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (Total: 8.5)
This is my favorite UNDER of the day. I understand both offenses are potent, and that the Angels with the exception of Josh Hamilton (.050 batting average), have seemed to wake up at the plate. However, you are looking at two of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball taking the mound tonight.
Darvish was incredible in his first start. It was against the Astros, so there is a small asterisk, but the movement and command was pretty impressive. Likewise for Weaver. He shut down the Reds on Opening Day, a team that hasn’t scored less than five runs in a game since.
I like both pitchers to be the story tonight.
Free Pick: Run Total UNDER 8.5 (-110)
