Los Angeles Angels +115 at New York Yankees -125 (Total: 7.5)
CJ Wilson vs. Hideki Kuroda
It was a fantastic first half to the major league baseball season. We have surprising teams atop several divisions, including the Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as some surprising contenders like the Baltimore Orioles and to some extent the Los Angeles Dodgers.
We have had emerging younger stars like Ryan Braun, Andrew McCutchen and Joey Votto storm into the NL MVP lead. Meanwhile an even YOUNGER emerging star, twenty year old rookie Mike Trout, has become a legitimate AL MVP contender (and some would say the leader at the season’s turn).
It’s going to be a fantastic second half to the MLB season, and we will be here at TheSportsGeek.com to guide you with savvy money-smart selections all season long. So to get in the mood for a fantastic second half of the season, let me give you my early (probably slightly too early…) World Series picks. In the National League, I am skeptical that the Giants bats (namely Melky Cabrera) can continue at the blistering pace they have been on, but I am also want to believe that Tim Linceum is actually now the single WORST starting pitcher in baseball (statistically he was for the first half). That said, I think the Giants balance out and ride their ridiculous pitching the NL pennant, defeating the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Championship Series.
In the American League, I like the Yankees getting to the AL Championship series… and then losing to their foe tonight, the Los Angeles Angels. I know Texas has the glamorous lineup, but in the end, give me the balance of offense and pitching that only the Angels possess in the American League. Everyone is going gaga over Trout and Trumbo, and for good reason. But the keys to this team remain the anchors of Albert Pujols and Jared Weaver. They are still two of the best in the world at their respective positions, and ultimately I like them capturing the World Series crown.
So there you have it; Angels over Giants in a flashback ten years to the day. Fortunately this time Dusty Baker’s kid is a little too old to get plowed at home plate…
On to tonight’s pick…
There isn’t a much better way to start the second half of the season than with my two AL picks squaring off for a fantastic three game series. Over the past month and a half, these have been (easily) the two best teams in all of baseball. And both starting pitchers tonight have been delivering as well.
CJ Wilson is a borderline Cy Young contender with a 9-5 record and a dazzling 2.43 ERA. He has been consistent and excellent all season long. Hideki Kuroda has also been consistent, thought not nearly as dominant as CJ. His 3.50 ERA and 1.26 WHIP are good, but not great. To me, that is troubling in a number two starter for a team with World Series aspirations.
The Yankees are a fairly solid favorite tonight, however, I find it hard not to be pretty excited about getting the hottest team in baseball with CJ Wilson on the mound at plus money. The Angels are a great value at +115 and that’s my official pick to start the second half of the season.
