Baseball celebrates Memorial Day with an awesome schedule of interleague rivalries. There are nearly a dozen natural geographic and traditional rivalries; The Yankees and Mets, Cubs and White Sox, Reds and Indians, Dodgers and Angels, and Red Sox and Phillies are a great start. Sure, there are a few teams with no natural or logical rival; Rockies and Astros, Braves and Blue Jays – but for the most part, it is going to be a great weekend for the fans.
Let’s take a look at a few on of the fun games this evening for a free pick and some nice, favorable lines to explore. A word of note, many of today’s games are Holiday matinees , so plan accordingly.
Today’s Free Picks:
Los Angeles Angels -109 at Los Angeles Dodgers +100 (Total: 7)
C.J. Wilson (4-3, 3.39 ERA) vs. Zach Greinke (2-1, 3.21 ERA)
This is the one glamorous inter-league rivalry game today that also has the glamorous starting pitching matchup to go with it. Both the Angels and Dodgers have been among the league’s most disappointing teams this season, but both have shown some signs of life lately, especially the Angels who have roared back into the picture with eight straight wins. They have scored a massive 59 runs in those eight games and haven’t scored LESS than five runs in a single game.
It will be a tough matchup for Greinke tonight. I don’t think he’ll get shelled, but this Angel team comes in as hot as any team in baseball, so banking on them to be completely shut down is giving Greinke a lot of credit in his third start back. He has looked OK in his return, but far from the dominant pitcher we saw in the first few weeks of the season. He is 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA in his three starts and has a sky-high WHIP of 1.60. That doesn’t bode particularly well before taking on an Angels lineup that hasn’t been held under 5 runs in more than a week.
C.J. Wilson has pitched a little better lately, despite his 1-2 record in the last three games; he has posted a 2.49 ERA. The Dodger lineup hasn’t been nearly as hot, but opposing Greinke he might need to have a good outing.
I like the Angels tonight and their red-hot lineup in a near even-money game. I also like this run total to sneak up over the 7 run total. Both bullpens have ERA’s over 4.30, so I’ll bank on a few runs late to edge to total over the low 7 run mark.
