Angels vs. Mariners Pick – MLB July 11th

This has just been a disaster of a season for the Seattle Mariners. If this were a Mariner team with the same quality roster of the last ten years or so, then okay, a 40-47 record is right on par with what I’d expect. But not in 2015, a team that went out this past offseason and spent some cash to beef up their offense. I’m not going to name names – okay never mind yes I am – Robinson Cano has been a major bust for the Mariners. He is getting away with one of the biggest contracts in the league, and not giving much back to his employers that gave him that money. His batting numbers have been abysmal, but defensively he has been a liability as well. I find that sloppy and lazy play on the field, not as much in the batters’ box, because all hitters do go through funks, is indicative of the amount of effort a player is putting forth. I don’t see much of an effort with Cano, but there is still a lot of baseball to be played, and players have been able to flip the switch in the second half of the season. A lot of people will be watching Cano closely, as will we tonight against the Angels.

We have to be happy about last night’s results once again. The Mets surrendered an early run in the top of the 1st inning, but they came right back with 4 runs of their own and never looked back. Giving Syndergaard a 3 run cushion is a death sentence for the opposing team. I think if he can stay healthy we’re going to be hearing about his name quite a bit. Let’s keep this roll going with our MLB pick for Saturday.

L.A. Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

C.J. Wilson (7-6, 3.82 ERA) vs. Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1, 7.17 ERA)

Let’s call it for what it is, Hisashi Iwakuma is not what he used to be, not even close. There is this notion that he is going to turn it around at any time, but that certainly hasn’t been the case. He continues to get bombed, and a once promising Mariner is falling apart before our eyes. The odds makers keep setting low totals with Iwakuma and they aren’t working to hold down the UNDER. When your ERA of 7.17 it is easy to see why. In his last seven starts he allowed 4 or more runs in all but one of them. His last four starts has yielded 4, 4, 4, and 5 runs against. The Angels have had no problems hammering the ball lately, so Iwakuma could be in for a rough one.

C.J. Wilson just had an unfortunate firework incident over the 4th of July. However, that is the football C.J. Wilson and not baseball C.J. Wilson. While you were reading that line you were probably coming to the conclusion that I’m an idiot, but I am fully aware it is a different guy. This Wilson did make some ridiculous comments about the football Wilson on twitter, but we won’t go there in this article. Wilson performing has been anything but great so I think he should reserve his energy for the mound and not social media. In his last three starts, Wilson posted a 6.43 ERA with a 1.70 WHIP and .394 OBA. Inconsistency has marred him this season. Again the odds makers are setting the total low with the Mariners at home. What they aren’t taking into consideration is that their pitching is not what it was before. Both of these pitchers are not who they used to be. There is also a nice price on the OVER so I’m going to bite at 7.5

PICK: OVER 7.5 RUNS (+114)
