The Cubbies secured their first victorious series of the 2014 season last night with an easy win against Arizona (now 5-18) and gave us a nice easy win in the process, running the record to 9-4 ATS over the past 13 games. We will try to keep it up tonight with another winning play.
It was also a big night for Albert Pujols, who became the third-youngest player in major league baseball history to reach the 500 homerun plateau. He is getting a lot of attention today, and deservedly so, but perhaps more attention should be paid to the fact that the still-young 34 year old slugger is healthy and off to his best start in several years. His numbers through three weeks are reminiscent of the MVP days in St. Louis. Coupled with Mike Trout, the Angels might just have enough offense to withstand the Josh Hamilton injury and stay afloat in the difficult AL West.
Let’s dive into today’s action and find a few winners on a Wednesday full of action.
Today’s Free Pick:
Los Angeles Angles +117 at Washington Nationals -125 (Total: 7)
Jered Weaver (1-2, 4.76 ERA) vs. Gio Gonzalez (3-1, 2.88 ERA)
Jered Weaver hasn’t gotten off to the type of start that he or the Angels hoped for, but he has been one of the most consistently excellent pitchers in baseball over the past five years, so it is a little early to ignore his tremendous stuff. He held the Tigers to one run in six innings in his last outing, which could be a good sign that he is coming around and getting back into form. His opposition tonight continues to be right at the heart of one of the best rotations in baseball, and while he’s given up a few runs in one tougher outing, he has already put three wins on the board and we still have a week left in April. He has given the Nats at least six innings in every one of his starts so far this season.
This series has been billed as “Trout vs. Harper” but in truth, both have been overshadowed by the resurgence and career-milestone of Albert Pujols. The 34-year old, as mentioned above, is off to a fantastic start to the season. I like him to have another nice game again tonight and help the Angels get enough runs to support a good outing from Weaver.
There haven’t been too many opportunities this season to get Jered Weaver at plus-money. Although he had a rough start to the season, he looked good in his last outing, and I like him to be sharp tonight. I’ll take a flyer on him bringing it tonight and ride with the Angels at a nice value of +117.
