Angels vs. Rangers Pick MLB – July 31st

Yuck. Losing a bet due to a runner stealing home base is never fun. With the Astros already with a 2-0 lead, they tacked on another in an early inning by stealing home with the bases loaded. The Orioles ended up coming back to capture a 4-3 victory, which is fine for them, but it gave us a loss on the RL. Without the stolen base the final score would have of course been 4-2. Bad breaks and good luck are always going to be a part of sports wagering though, so no use in ranting too much over misfortunes. It’s always better to look towards the future instead of dwelling on the past, and that’s what we’re going to do.

I haven’t lost three straight picks in over a month, and I don’t plan on hitting an unfortunate losing streak entering August. After focusing on a few not so intriguing games the past few days, I’m going to look at a more exciting affair.

Free MLB Pick:

Los Angeles Angels +120 at Texas Rangers -145 (Total: 8.5)

Jerome Williams (5-7, 4.85 ERA) vs. Martin Perez (3-3, 4.37 ERA)

It is quite surreal to look at the standings and see where the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers are. Both had hopes and aspirations to not only make a big push this season, but to be the last team standing in the World Series. The Angels in particular have been a major disappointment. After giving monster contracts to Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton, the Angels haven’t received their end of the deal yet. It looks like Pujols could be out for the rest of the season with a foot injury, while Hamilton hasn’t been performing like he did with his former team, the Rangers. The Rangers are in a much better position than the Angels are at the moment, as they are very much alive in the playoff run. However, they have been sputtering out of the All-Star break gates, losing five in a row before taking two from the Angels.

The Rangers got a 3 run walk-off homer from Leonys Martin to give them a 14-11 win, yes 14-11. The bats were alive and well last night, we’ll see Jerome Williams and Martin Perez trying to shut that down tonight. Williams and Martin have suffered similar fates of late, as they have both been fairly brutal. Williams brings a 4.85 ERA with him to Arlington, with a lackluster number of 4.62 on the road. Williams, believe it or not, has been around since 1999, so this isn’t his first kick at the can. If his numbers continue to slip like they have recently, 9.45 ERA in his last three starts, then it may be the end of his career following this year.

Like Williams, Martin has failed to find any kind of rhythm of late. His last three starts have been disastrous as well, almost on point with Williams, a 9.00 ERA. His numbers indicate that he has been rock solid at home, but that’s only over three games and 18.1 innings pitched. He shut the Mariners and Reds out, but got touched up against the Orioles in his last home start.

I think we see the offenses pick up where they left off last night. Outside of last night both teams have been fairly quiet offensively, but I think there’s too much talent on both rosters for that to be a continual trend. I believe we’ll be able to get enough runs tonight to push this one over the posted total of 9.5.
