The LA Angels move on from their three-game sweep of the Royals to another American League Central opponent, the Minnesota Twins. The Royals have been a mess this season, and while the Twins haven’t been as bad, they are not living up to expectations. At least that’s been the tale of the tape for the Twins thus far in 2018. They got a shot at the Yankees in the play-in game last year, but fell at Yankee Stadium.
The Twins want more than just the wildcard round in 2018. Thanks to a slow start by everyone else in the AL Central, including the Indians, the Twins are still right in it with a paltry record of 26-32. Despite six games under .500, the Twins are within one hot run of taking the lead in the division. They’re 4.5 games behind the Indians with a lot of baseball left to be played.
Gauging by their effort up to this point, it’s not going to be easy to catch the Indians even though they are within striking distance. They will likely go on a run, but the Indians will also go on runs, probably on more occasions than the Twins. Minnesota did string together a nice little four-game run, as they took three of four against the Indians and a win against the White Sox before dropping their next two. You don’t want to lose two of three against a bad White Sox team. Those are the type of series that will come back and haunt a team come September when everyone is jockeying for position. Head below for our free Angels vs. Twins pick.
L.A. Angels vs. Minnesota Twins Pick
Garrett Richards (4-4, 3.25 ERA) vs. Lance Lynn (4-4, 5.46 ERA)
Lance Lynn was acquired by the Minnesota Twins to give themselves some more firepower in the pitching staff to make a run this year. Lynn, like some others, haven’t panned out for the Twins in 2018, at least not yet. However, Lynn has been showing some indications that he is turning a corner. He has been superb in his last three starts, posting a strong ERA of 1.45.
This is the first time we have seen glimpses of him playing like the Twins were expecting to get when they signed him. He still has some work to do if he wants to bring up that 5.46 ERA, though. Lynn posted ERA’s of 2.74, 3.03, and 3.43 the last three seasons in St. Louis, so maybe he just needed some to adjust to life with his new team. Lynn spent his entire six-year career in St. Louis, so it’s be a change for him in the American League. The Angles are hitting .228 against Lynn.
All Garrett Richards is hoping for is to stay healthy this season. When he is healthy, Richards can be a sharp hurler. 2016 and 2017 were both cut short, with only six starts to his credit. He was pitching well in both years as well, ultimately finishing with an ERA of 2.34 and 2.28. He has already matched his workload in the last two years just this season already.
Richards will make his thirteenth start of the year against the Twins tonight. He’s looked good with a 2.51 ERA in his last three outings. He is coming off 7 innings of shutout baseball against the Rangers, while allowing just 1 hit. The Twins are hitting .221 vs Richards in 95 at-bats. We successfully made it 10 winners in a row on the diamond, with a couple more winners yesterday. Let’s keep it going with a winning pick on the UNDER in Minnesota.
