The Angels and Yankees switch spots, as the Yankees come home, and the Angels head far out east on the road. The Angels have had seven straight games at home, but will be far away from California beginning Tuesday. Conversely, the Yankees are back home following seven games on the road.
It wasn’t a pretty road trip for the Yankees, as they swallowed six losses out of seven, including heading into tonight with six losses in a row. The Angels took two of three, and then the Athletics mopped the floor with them for a series sweep.
Is this a sign of things to come for the Yanks? Perhaps not an indication of the long-term forecast, but there was bound to be some correction and variation with their record, though. The Yankees were not going to play at that torrid pace all year long, there was bound to be some regression. Same goes for Aaron Judge, who was tearing the laces off the ball. The Yanks ran into that trap on the road, but what they have to do is hope it doesn’t follow them back home.
With the seven-game skid, the Yanks are now tied with the Red Sox for 1st in the American League East. It felt like just a few days ago that the Yankees had a demanding lead in the division, but it just goes to show how quickly everything can go sour in just a week. However, the Yankees return home to Yankee Stadium where they’ve had a lot of success.
At home in 2017, the Yankees are 22-9, compared to 16-20 away which they must improve on. The Angels and Yankees met in Anaheim not too long ago. We’ll do it all over again in the Bronx this time. Head below for our free MLB betting pick, featuring the L.A. Angels and New York Yankees.
L.A. Angels vs. N.Y. Yankees Pick
Parker Bridwell (1-0, 2.79 ERA) vs. Michael Pineda (7-3, 3.71 ERA)
The Yanks will rely on Michael Pineda to get them on track tonight. Their pitching has been getting mauled, a large reason for why they are in a slump. In their last five games, the Yankees have allowed an average of 6.2 runs per game, including four of five that saw 5 or more runs.
Pineda faced the Angels on the 14th and he took a 7-5 loss. Across 5 innings, he allowed 10 hits and 5 runs. Although, no one has been able to touch him at home yet, as he holds a 1.96 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Compare that with his abysmal 6.25 ERA on the road.
While Pineda was just dinged against the Angels, Parker Bridwell was masterful for the Angels in relief duties, at first look. In 3.2 innings he didn’t allow an earned run. But by looking at the big picture, his numbers reveal 7 hits against in that short frame. The Yankees will take advantage of those spots at home. Bridwell only has one career start, which came against the Atlanta Braves on May 30th. He allowed 6 hits and 3 runs with 4 strikeouts. This is a rather big stage for Bridwell at Yankee Stadium. I like the Yankees to bust out of this slump they’ve been in and look much better than they did on the road. Some doubt regarding the Yankees is creeping in for some people, but they should put that to rest tonight at Yankee Stadium.
PICK: YANKEES -1.5 (-115)
