We picked up a nice win last night when we backed the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Colorado Rockies. The game was an even pick ‘em, and I couldn’t pass up getting Zack Greinke at even money, so I jumped on it. The game itself wasn’t all that competitive. The DBacks scored early and often and had built up a 5-1 lead through three innings. Arizona coasted the rest of the way out to a 9-4 victory, and we cashed our ticket at a good price.
Greinke wasn’t as sharp as I had hoped, and I guess it is a little bit understandable as nobody ever is at Coors Field. In the end, he did enough to get his team the win and was significantly better than Rockies started German Marquez, who lasted just four innings and allowed five runs. For today’s pick, I will stay right here in Colorado and look at game two of the series between the Rockies and the Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are in Colorado Saturday for game two of a three-game set with the Rockies. With the win in game one, the Diamondbacks now have a game and a half lead over Colorado for the National League West Division crown. The DBacks have really started to heat up as they have now won seven out of their last ten games. The opposite has bee the case for the Rockies as they have lost six out of their last eight games.
Starting today for the Diamondbacks is Matt Koch (4-3 3.76 ERA), and for the Rockies, it is Chad Bettis (4-1 4.02 ERA). The Rockies are -137 home favorites. The game total over-under is set at a Coors Field sized thirteen runs. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 PM PST from Coors Field in Colorado.
There is something strange about his Colorado Rockies team this year. They can’t seem to win at home. Like ever. Their eleven home wins are fewer than every team in baseball except the last place Cincinnati Reds. They are six games under .500 at home, and it is their stellar road record of 21-14 that is keeping them in the NL West race right now. One guy that has really struggled at home for Colorado is today’s starter Chad Bettis.
Bettis has had five home starts this season. He has yet to record a win and has an ERA of 7.24. On the road? This guy has been borderline elite this year. In starts away from Coors Field, Bettis is 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA. It is like he is two different guys when he pitches at home and on the road. Both of his last two starts have been at home, and he pitched a total of eleven and two-thirds of an inning and gave up ten runs, all earned. What will Bettis be able to do today against an Arizona team that is starting to really heat up?
Arizona starter Matt Koch has been a bit inconsistent at times this season. There have been times where he has looked unbelievably good. Like in his last start where he pitched seven innings of shutout ball and allowed just three hits. Or in his five other starts this season where he has allowed two earned runs or fewer. But even with as good as he can be, he is a bit prone to a blowup game. Like against the Brewers when he gave up eight runs in just over four innings of work.
This game is likely to be another high scoring slugfest. The game total of thirteen is very high and really is a Coors Field only kind of number. You can expect there to be fireworks tonight that is for sure. I just can’t see why the Rockies are favored in this one. They are absolutely terrible at home. They have been terrible at home all season long. Bettis can’t seem not to get rocked at home, and I strongly feel that the DBacks should be favored in this game.
Arizona is just playing much better baseball right now. They are finally getting back to how they played in April when they were running away with the NL West Division title. The Rockies are on a slide right now, and with all other things being equal, as they appear to be tonight, I am always going to like backing a hot team against one that is losing a bunch of games. Baseball is a very streaky sport and hot and cold streaks need to be taken into consideration. So, I will take the Arizona Diamondbacks in this one as road underdogs and feel like I am certainly getting the best of it. Give me the Arizona Diamondbacks as road underdogs at +117 today in game two in Colorado!
