Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Cleveland Guardians Pick – MLB August 3, 2022

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Guardians have an afternoon date at Progressive Field. This is the second of three meetings in an interleague series in Cleveland. The Diamondbacks started things off well with a 6-3 win.

Zac Gallen wasn’t perfect, but he did enough to hold the Guardians down for a 3-run win. Gallen allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs across 5.2 innings of work on the bump. He can be better, but the bullpen was in strong form and Triston McKenzie was roughed up for 4 earned runs.

The Guardians weren’t at their best last night, but they’re in the mix in the AL Central. A record of 53-50 is good for a one-game deficit. The Minnesota Twins lead the division at 54-49. The White Sox are two games behind the Twins.

It’s going to be a close finish in the AL Central. This is the worst division in baseball, but at least it should make for a close call at the wire.

The Guardians have won five of their last eight attempts going into Wednesday.

They’re very fortunate to be in a spot where the division can be won in September. The mediocre effort from the White Sox and Twins is keeping the Guardians afloat. Mind you, this has been a solid campaign for the Twins given their expectations.

The Diamondbacks are making strides in the right direction and have shown improvement over the past few years. They are entering this matchup with a record of 46-57 after a 52-110 campaign in 2021.

The Snakes have a rookie on the bump this afternoon. Tommy Henry will have his major league debut on Wednesday afternoon. 2022 AL Cy Young winner, Shane Bieber, is countering for the Guardians.

Diamondbacks vs. Guardians Prediction:

The Diamondbacks are looking for a strong start for Tommy Henry right out of the gate. The 25-year-old Michigan Wolverine was drafted in 2019 with the No. 74 selection.

Henry is the 13th-ranked prospect in the Diamondbacks’ minor league system.

He is not projected to develop into an ace for the D-backs, but there are many pitchers in history that outpitched expectations. Henry joins the big leagues after 20 starts in Triple-A.

That’s the review for Henry from his experience in the minor leagues in 2022. He’s been fine and will probably need to pitch better in the majors for the same results.

Henry posted an ERA of 3.83 and a 1.34 WHIP in 108 innings of work in Triple-A. There were problems for Henry last year in Double-A, with a 5.21 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.

The Guardians are going to be the toughest assignment of his career so far.

Cleveland is eighth in the majors with a team batting average of .252 and the best team in the majors at avoiding strikeouts. Don’t expect Henry to fan too many batters in this one.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Cleveland Guardians Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 4-9 overall in their previous 13 games versus the American League on the road
  • 2-8 overall in their previous ten games on the road
  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games at Cleveland
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games on a Wednesday
  • UNDER is 5-2 in their previous seven games on the road

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games at home
  • 7-2 overall in their previous nine games versus the NL West
  • 6-2 overall in their previous eight games on a Wednesday
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games versus a left-handed starter
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games versus the Diamondbacks at home

  • Shane Bieber won in 2020 and has still been in pretty good shape. He’s not in Cy Young form, but Bieber is a productive starter.

Bieber enters tonight with an ERA of 3.41 and a 1.14 WHIP.

He’s in similar form recently, as Bieber owns a 3.27 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in his previous three attempts. Nobody in the Diamondbacks lineup has faced Bieber before, so he should have the advantage.

With the rookie on the hill, expect the Guardians to get to him at Progressive Field in this one. Look for the Guardians to force a rubber match, with the Guardians winning by at least 2 runs.
