Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies Pick – MLB April 7, 2021

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies had an entertaining night at Coors Field on Tuesday evening. The Diamondbacks outlasted the Rockies for a 10-8 win in extra innings. The game went to the 13th inning, with the Diamondbacks scoring 3 runs in the top half of the inning, and the Rockies responding with a single run.

The Diamondbacks were able to avoid a record of 1-4, while the Rockies were pushed to a tough 1-4 start this season. Both teams play in an impossible NL West that includes the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres and Dodgers are out to the top two spots in the division, no surprise there.

It’s likely that things aren’t going to change much come September. The Dodgers and Padres have a good chance of finishing No. 1 and No. 2 in the NL West. The Dodgers have a game advantage on the Padres going into Wednesday. We’ve only played a week of baseball in the regular season, so we’re in the infancy of this season.

The Diamondbacks and Rockies are going to be battling with the San Francisco Giants for the third spot in the division. Maybe one of them can squeak out a wildcard to get into the postseason, but getting past the Dodgers and Padres is going to be difficult. It’s just bad luck that two of the best teams in the major leagues happen to be in the same division.

Arizona avoided a sweep with a 3-1 win against the Padres on Sunday. They were looking at four straight losses, but now the Diamondbacks are looking at the potential for three straight wins on Wednesday night. Luke Weaver held up well for 4 hits and 3 earned runs through 5.2 innings.

You can’t expect much more from Weaver pitching at Coors Field. He put the Diamondbacks in a position to win. German Marquez did well for the Rockies, too, with 5 hits and 3 earned runs allowed. The Rockies lost the battle of the bullpens, though. Both teams reached deep into their bullpens last night. We’ll see if that has an impact on tonight’s festivities in Denver. Diamondbacks vs. Rockies Prediction:

The Giants passed on giving Madison Bumgarner a new contract. After a career that saw Bumgarner as one of the best Giant pitchers in franchise history, they believed it was time to say goodbye. It looks like the Giants made the right decision, and the Diamondbacks might have wasted their money on another brand name pitcher. While Zack Greinke didn’t do bad with the Diamondbacks, the team was not in a position to sign a pitcher for big money.

Bumgarner regressed hard in his first season with the Diamondbacks. He posted an ERA of 6.48 and 1.44 WHIP. Bumgarner’s velocity was in the toilet, as he conceded 30 earned runs in 47 innings of work. Spring training was hopefully going to be a time for Bumgarner to work things out in the desert. Nope, not the case. Bumgarner recorded an ERA of 6.35 with 8 earned runs allowed in 11.1 innings. He was tagged for 3 home runs in his warm up for the regular season. When the lights got brighter in his season opener against the Padres, Bumgarner couldn’t fix what ailed him.

The Padres pummeled Bumgarner for 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 innings. He ended the game with a 13.50 ERA and 2.50 WHIP. The Padres were hot at the plate with a batting average of .368. The Rockies aren’t the Padres, but this is Coors Field and a decent Rockies’ offense. Bumgarner hasn’t been strong at Coors in his career, and it’s been a successful career for Bumgarner. He owns a 4.56 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through 100.2 innings in Denver. Coors Field isn’t the best place to play for a pitcher with velocity problems.

Antonio Senzatela hopes to build on a solid 2020, but it wasn’t a good start for him. Senzatela was hammered against the Dodgers on April 3. He gave up 9 hits and 7 earned runs across 3.1 innings for a 18.90 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. Senzatela owns a 5.11 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in his five-year career. He notched a career-high 3.44 ERA, but Senzatela has to prove it wasn’t a blip. The Diamondbacks have hit .264 with a .341 OBP and 14 RBI against Senzatela through 91 at-bats. I will take the OVER at a good price tonight.
