Zac Gallen (0-0, 2.81 ERA) vs. Kyle Freeland (2-0, 2.41 ERA)
The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies got into a high-scoring shootout on Monday night at Coors Field. No surprise there on a hot night in Denver. The park is a launching pad for long balls under normal conditions, but when it’s a sizzler, the ball flies out of there. Arizona outlasted the Rockies for a 12-8 win.
Kole Calhoun led the Diamondbacks with 3 RBI on 2-for-5 hitting. David Peralta and Christian Walker each added 2 RBI with their bats to help the Diamondbacks’ winning cause. Robbie Ray offered little assistance on the bump. He was swallowed up for 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 3.2 innings. With Jon Gray giving up 11 hits and 8 earned runs in 3.1 innings, Ray was able to get away with a poor showing.
That tends to happen often at Coors Field. It can come down to which pitcher sucks the least. That was the case last night in Denver. Neither pitcher was hitting their spots, with Gray taking the worst of it. Despite the loss on Monday, the Rockies are feeling good about their record of 11-5. The Dodgers took a loss last night, so they maintain their half game lead in the NL West.
One would assume that the Dodgers will eventually take things over in the NL West, but who knows. We’ve seen good teams go cold for weeks at a time during the course of a normal regular season. Maybe the Rockies catch the Dodgers taking their eyes off the prize. I’m still confident in the Dodgers winning the division, but the World Series is something else. One of the brightest spots for the Rockies so far has been the play of Kyle Freeland.
Freeland had a disappointing 2019 campaign after an electric 2018. There was a lot of excitement surrounding Freeland going into last season as the next potential ace in Denver. However, things went astray and Freeland was sent down to the minors. Freeland gets the starting nod on Tuesday. Former Miami Marlin, Zac Gallen, is scheduled to pitch opposite Freeland for the Diamondbacks. Head below for our free Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies pick for August 11, 2020.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies MLB Baseball Betting Odds:
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies Prediction:
The Diamondbacks will send out Zac Gallen who they acquired in a trade with the Marlins last July. In return, the Diamondbacks sent away shortstop Jazz Chisholm to Miami. Chisholm is still awaiting a promotion, while Gallen is off to a fast start in his first full time job in the major leagues. Gallen received seven starts with the Marlins and eight with the Diamondbacks.
He posted an ERA of 2.81 and 1.23 WHIP between the Marlins and D-backs. Gallen has matched that production thus far across three starts in 2020. He owns an ERA of 2.81 and 1.25 WHIP through 16 innings. How’s that for consistency. Gallen is certainly one of the better pitchers in that majors that you may not have heard of yet.
Kyle Freeland garnered a lot of attention two years ago when he recorded an ERA of 2.85 and 1.25 WHIP. That was his sophomore season and coming out party for Freeland. Doing that in Denver with the Rockies is especially impressive. He had made 15 starts at the dangerous Coors Field and handled it exceptionally well. Not many pitchers can say that they tamed Coors, but Freeland was excellent.
He posted an ERA of 2.40 and 1.17 WHIP, with batters hitting just .228 against him. That’s not easy to do in Denver. The momentum that Freeland gained all came crashing down the following year, though. Freeland had an ERA of 6.73 and 1.58 WHIP in 22 starts and he was sent down to the minors.
He appears to have made some tweaks, and the results have been positive in 2020. Freeland enters Tuesday with an ERA of 2.41 and 1.07 WHIP in three games. He has yielded 3 earned runs in 12.2 innings at home going into today. I’m going to side with the Rockies to bounce back and tie this series up with the D-backs behind an adequate performance by Freeland. The offense should be able to take care of the rest.
