Astros vs. Orioles Pick MLB – July 30th

After being hot last week, we started the week off with a dud yesterday. The Mets and Marlins combined with 11 runs in a 6-5 victory for the Mets to push it over the posted total. You’re going to miss a pick here and there, so nothing to get too upset over. Still very much in the positive on the year, and at the end of the year that is the only thing that matters. Speaking of duds, we are going to feature one dud of a team in our pick for Tuesday night.

Free MLB Pick:

Houston Astros +220 at Baltimore Orioles -245 (Total: 8.5)

Bud Norris (6-9, 3.93 ERA) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (5-3, 2.78 ERA)

The Baltimore Orioles are hitting a critical point in the season, where they don’t have much room error and need to stay on the right path moving forward. The Orioles are currently 3rd in the AL East with a record of 58-48. One bad stretch could spell doom, but a good stretch could catapult them into earning a playoff spot comfortably. Lately for the Orioles it has been a little bit of a work in progress, as they have dropped 5 out of their last 6 games. The teams’ downfall, in large part, has been due to an average to below average starting rotation. However, recently it has been the opposite, as their bats have failed to generate any kind of offense. The Orioles will try and get back on track against the dysfunctional Houston Astros.

The Astros will send out inconsistent starter Bud Norris to pick up a meaningless victory for them, and make life a tad more miserable for the Baltimore Orioles. At this point it is really all the Astros can try and do against other teams. Embarrass them by simply beating them is their motto. If numbers tell the whole story, they are not going to like their chances at embarrassing the Orioles Tuesday night. Norris has been absolutely atrocious on the road this year, and has been particularly bad in his last three outings. Away from home Norris has compiled a rocky ERA of 5.91 with a 1.59 WHIP. His last three have been even more terrible, posting a 8.47 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. Norris’ overall ERA has been lowered due to some good pitching at home, but it clearly takes a turn for the worst after playing in an opposing teams’ ballpark.

The Orioles will counter with Wei-Yin Chen. Chen should be a godsend for the Orioles as we get deeper into the season. They desperately needed a solid pitcher, and I think they have that with Chen. He missed most of May and all of June, but has come back quite brilliantly. In his last three starts Chen notched an ERA of only 2.18 and a 1.11 WHIP. He is also quite unbeatable at home, where he holds a spectacular 1.86 ERA.

The Orioles have been in a major funk since returning from the All-Star break. Slugger Chris Davis knows it all too well, as he has 20 strikeouts in only 10 games. I think that this is a game they bust out in a big way, though. They are backed by their ace, going up against a pitcher that has had problems feeling homesick this season. With the big price I’ll take the RL in anticipation of a big blowout victory. The Orioles team total OVER is worth a look, too.
