The New York Yankees welcome the Athletics to Yankee Stadium after the Yankees were swept in Oakland last week. The Yankees did not look interested in playing the Athletics and it showed on the scoreboard. They lost all three games in Oakland, before turning around and finding success close by at Dodger Stadium against the Dodgers. It certainly wasn’t their best effort, as they were outscored by 17-9 in three games. Frustration turned to glee pretty fast, though. The Yankees were winners in two of three games against the Dodgers after their trip to Oakland.
The Yankees followed that series up with a sweep of the Seattle Mariners in easy fashion. Back at home, they’ll face a more difficult opponent in the Athletics this weekend. They just got swept by the A’s not that long ago, so they are familiar with what they are capable of doing. Following the A’s sweep of the Yankees, they had a letdown against the Giants with a couple of losses in a short interleague series, and then came back to win three of four games against the Royals most recently.
After last week, the Yankees should know by now not to take the Athletics lightly. They are playing for something, as they look to fend off the Rays in the AL for a spot in the Wild Card Game. They’d have to go to Cleveland for a meeting with the Indians if the game was tonight. Having to travel nearly to one side of the country to the other and play in a different time zone would give one team a serious advantage in that case. Brett Anderson will get a chance to make it four wins in a row over the Yankees for the A’s. CC Sabathia is expected to counter for the Yanks. Head below for our free Athletics vs. Yankees pick.

When the Yankees are focused, they can make a blowout of a game pretty quickly. Their quick strike offense could be very dangerous in the postseason. However, for a team that relies on their offense a lot, it could be dangerous against a hot rotation like the Astros. They can’t afford for their offense to go cold at the worst possible time in October. The Astros are built to win low-scoring pitching matchups.
The Yankees on the other hand have to rely on their offense more so. Sabathia enters with a pedestrian ERA of 4.99 and 1.41 WHIP. He has been getting pushed around of late, with an 8.74 ERA in his previous three outings. Sabathia will be back home for this one, though.
Yankee Stadium has been much friendlier to Sabathia than the road has. CC owns a rock solid ERA of 3.19 and 1.19 WHIP in 48 innings at home. Compare that with his mess on the road, where he’s posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.62 WHIP.
Anderson has been too hot recently as well. He is heading into Yankee Stadium with an ERA of 4.76 and 1.53 WHIP in his last three contests. In any event, Anderson has been good for the A’s this season, posting an overall of 4.08 ERA for a decent 2019.
The Yankees have done well against Anderson, with a .288 batting average and .337 OBP in 80 at-bats. Oakland may have swept the Yankees last week on the west coast, but expect the Yankees to get their revenge at Yankee Stadium this weekend. Look for the Yankees to open the series with a win Friday night.
