Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets MLB Pick – August 24th

The MLB is set up with a total of fifteen games for Saturday night. One of the matchups up on the board will be between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets. These two NL East rivals are in positions to make playoff pushes late this season, which should help lead to a good game on Saturday night. This game will start at around 7:10 PM Eastern time on August 24.

The Braves have put up a record of 78-52 to this point in the season, which has them sitting in first place of the NL East. Atlanta has won six games in a row to help them extend their lead on the division. The Braves will look to put up their seventh victory in a row with another win on the road against the Mets.

New York is currently sitting in third place of the NL East with a record of 67-61 so far this season. The Mets took a tough loss last night, but before that loss, they had won five in a row and fourteen of their last eighteen games. New York is behind in the wild card race, but if they keep this strong finish up, they could sneak into the postseason.

These two teams have a lot on the line in this series as they try and further their push into the playoffs. Atlanta is much more comfortable with their positioning, while the Mets are trying to make up ground in the wild card race. This series started out strong last night and I expect another strong matchup on Saturday night.

Previous Matchups

The Braves and the Mets have met in four previous series before this most recent one. The first series in Atlanta was split 2-2 between the two teams. The Braves hosted the second series as well, and they took it 2-1. The third series shifted to New York, and Atlanta found a way to pull off a 2-1 win in that series as well. The fourth series stayed in New York and once again the Braves took the series 2-1.

Last night’s matchup was a really good one. The Braves got the first run in the sixth with an RBI single from Freddie Freeman. Jacob deGrom responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. The game took extra innings, but an RBI single by Billy Hamilton gave Atlanta the 2-1 win.

These two teams have played well against each other this season, but the Braves hold a 9-5 record on the season against New York. Last night’s game took 14 innings to finish up, which could lead to some fatigue late in Saturday night’s game. I believe that the Mets will come out strong though to bounce back with a win for their home fans.

The Braves have seen some solid hitting throughout this season. Atlanta has been led by Ronald Acuna Jr. who has put up 155 hits, 36 home runs and 88 RBI’s on the season. Freddie Freeman has had a great season as well, earning 151 hits, 34 homers, 104 RBI’s and an OPS of .970. Ozzie Albies has 149 hits, 18 home runs and 68 RBI’s, while Josh Donaldson has 118 hits, 29 homers and 73 RBI’s.

Amed Rosario has 140 hits, 12 home runs and 54 RBI’s this season for New York. Pete Alonso has been leading this team though with 123 hits, 40 home runs, 97 RBI’s and an OPS of .967. Michael Conforto has had a solid year, putting up 110 hits, 27 homers and 76 RBI’s. Wilson Ramos, J.D. Davis, and Todd Frazier all have over 80 hits and 10 home runs on the season as well.

Atlanta has been hit hard with the injury bug late in the season as they are missing Nick Markakis, Dansby Swanson, Brian McCann, Ender Inciarte and Austin Riley. The Mets are without Jeff McNeil, Robinson Cano, and Dominic Smith. Even with the injuries though, both teams have solid lineups that can deal with damage throughout.

Max Fried will get the start on the mound for the Braves on Saturday night. Fried has had a solid season, putting up a record of 14-4 through 24 starts and 26 games. He has an ERA of 3.84 and a WHIP of 1.401 in those games. Fried’s last start came against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he allowed eight hits and three runs through five innings.

Zack Wheeler has had a solid season as well for New York and he will get the start on Saturday. Wheeler has a 9-7 record through 24 starts this season. He has an ERA of 4.40 and a WHIP of 1.266 through those start. Wheeler allowed four hits and four runs, three earned, through five innings in his last start against the Kansas City Royals.

Fried has been red hot in his previous performances as he has earned a win in five of his last six starts. The Braves will need another strong performance from him if they want to pull off another win against the Mets. Wheeler has had a solid season and will look to avoid his third loss of the season against Atlanta with a much needed win for New York.

Pick Overview

The Braves have better the better team in their season series against New York this season, but I like the Mets chance to bounce back with a win on Saturday night. Max Fried has been playing great as of late, but I believe that he is due for a tough start and the Mets could give him some trouble early. New York will look to take advantage of the holes in Atlanta’s starting lineup to earn a big win to tie up this series at home.

BetOnline has the Mets listed as a -112 against the money line for Saturday’s matchup. I believe that this is a good line as it gives a slight edge to the hometown Mets, but keeps it close to even. Even as a favorite in this game, I believe there is a lot of value on New York. The Mets will look for the fans to help fuel them past the fatigue to earn a win on Saturday.
