Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals Pick – MLB June 9, 2022

The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals are at Kauffman Stadium for a four-game series this weekend. This is a battle of the losers in the American League, but the future looks better for the Orioles. The Royals are probably a step or two behind the Orioles.

Baltimore went 52-110 and a whopping 48 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays last year. They were the only team in the AL East that wasn’t within double digits of the Rays, but the Orioles made up for it with those terrible results.

The Orioles are in much better shape than they were last year. That isn’t saying much, but they have to start somewhere. The front office knew it was going to be a painful period when they sold and traded Manny Machado, but the payoff should be there in a few years.

The O’s are going into Thursday night with an ERA of 24-33 and 16.5 games behind in the AL East. That’s a step forward despite it not looking like much.

The Orioles are coming off a 9-3 win on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs.

They could only play one game because of the rain at Camden Yards. Before that series, the Orioles came off two of three losses against the Cleveland Guardians.

Baltimore should be prepared to lose lots of series this year, but they aren’t going to get swept nearly as often. Splitting a four-game series can be viewed as a success.

However, that can’t be the mindset, especially at Kauffman against the Royals. The Royals are 18-37 and 13.5 games behind the Twins in the AL Central.

KC has lost eight of ten attempts going into Thursday night. They had a nice showing versus the Toronto Blue Jays to finish off the series with an 8-4 win on Wednesday to avoid getting swept.

Orioles vs. Royals Prediction:

The Orioles have plenty of holes to patch up, especially in the starting rotation. If the Orioles can develop some of their talented prospects into solid pitchers, they will begin to take off.

A guy like Jordan Lyles is not part of the future plans and is just a filler in the rotation this season. Lyles is going into Thursday night with an ERA of 4.50 and a 1.48 WHIP.

He’s a 31-year-old that has been in the majors since 2011. Lyles has a career ERA of 5.17 and a 1.44 WHIP, so he’s just doing what he’s expected of doing this season.

Lyles has posted an ERA of 5.62 and a 1.75 WHIP in his previous three attempts. That includes a .397 OBP for his opponents.

His work on the road hasn’t been promising, so despite the Royals not being the best offense, he hasn’t had good form against most teams away from Camden Yards.

Lyles has an ERA of 6.03 and a 1.60 WHIP across 32 innings on the road.

The Royals have had some success against Lyles, with a .291 batting average and 6 RBIs in 64 at-bats. They’ve gotten on base against Lyles in his career.

Baltimore Orioles vs. KC Royals Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 13-38 overall in their previous 51 games as an underdog
  • 13-40 overall in their previous 53 games on a Thursday
  • OVER is 7-0 in their previous seven first game of a series
  • OVER is 7-1-1 in their previous nine games
  • OVER is 6-1-1 in their previous eight games as an underdog

  • Record (Last 10): 2-8
  • 1-10 overall in their previous 11 games versus a team with a losing record
  • 2-8 overall in their previous ten games at home
  • OVER is 10-4 in their previous 14 games versus a eight-handed starter
  • OVER is 7-3 in their previous ten games at home
  • OVER is 13-6 in their previous 19 games

  • Kris Bubic will do what he can to keep the Royals in this one. The lefty finally settled down in his last start, as he lasted 5 innings with no runs allowed at home. However, this hasn’t been the norm for Bubic.

Bubic enters tonight with an ERA of 9.33 and a 2.07 WHIP.

He was going into that start versus the Astros with a 12.83 ERA after allowing 1 earned run in an inning against the Rangers as a reliever. Bubic owns a 7.11 ERA and 2.05 WHIP in his previous three attempts.

Bubic is going into Kauffman with an ERA of 7.63 and a 1.89 WHIP at home. He’s in his third season and was looking to improve on a 4.43 ERA in his first full time role a season ago.

I’m looking at playing the total in this matchup in Kansas City. At even money, there has to be some value on the OVER in a double-digit final score.
