The Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners headline a Tuesday night matchup at T-Mobile Park. The Orioles got off to a sharp start last night with a 5-3 win over the Mariners’ bullpen. It was a bullpen game for the Mariners, and it went pretty well until the 8th inning. The Orioles scored all of their runs in the top of the 8th to take a 5-1 lead. A couple of runs from the Mariners weren’t enough to stage a comeback.
Dean Kremer gave the Orioles 6 innings of strong baseball on the hill. Kremer allowed just 2 hits and 1 earned run in the win. The O’s advanced to 14-15 on the season with the win. They’ve been adequate in what is another rebuilding year in Baltimore. There aren’t any lofty expectations for the Orioles, but progress and developing the younger guys properly would be a success. So far we’ve seen the Orioles take some steps forward in this young season. They go into the second game against the Mariners with wins in four of their last six outings.
The Mariners aren’t expecting to be World Series contenders in 2021, but in a wide-open AL West, there has to be some interest for the Mariners on the betting markets. Seattle is currently two games behind the Oakland Athletics for the lead with a record of 16-14. I don’t think the Mariners are quite there yet, and we’ve seen them come up flat during seasons we thought they’d do something. It would be more of a betting the price situation if I were to back the Mariners to win the division.
They have been topsy-turvy so far in 2021. It’s hard to get a feel for where they’re going this season. The Mariners have looked great in spots and terrible other times. We can say that for so many teams this season. Seattle beat the Angels in two out of three games prior to this series against the Orioles. They were coming off a 2-0 win against the Angels on Sunday. This time the pitching staff couldn’t keep it together late, though, to make up for the shortcomings of the offense. Head below for our free Orioles vs. Mariners pick on May 4, 2021.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Betting Odds:
Orioles vs. Mariners Prediction:
The Orioles will look to get another productive performance out of Jorge Lopez. He’s coming off a solid outing against the New York Yankees on April 29. Lopez has looked good in two of his previous three starts despite a cumulative ERA of 7.48 this season. He gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs against the Rangers on April 16, and then most recently his best performance with 2 earned runs across 4 innings against the Yankees.
Slowing down a bad Rangers’ offense is one thing, but pitching well versus the Yankees’ bats is reason to feel optimistic. Having said that, Lopez still owns a 7.48 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Opposing batters own a .340 OBP against Lopez in 2021. He hasn’t had an ERA below 4.00 since he made ten appearances out of the bullpen with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018.
In six starts and three outings out of the bullpen last year, Lopez recorded an ERA of 6.34 and 1.43 WHIP. Lopez has a 6.16 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 250 innings throughout his career, which started back in 2015 with the Brewers. The Mariners’ offense should be able to bounce back to form against Lopez at home on Tuesday night. Seattle will counter with Justin Dunn on the bump in this one. Dunn is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season against the O’s. He was a member of the rotation on a full-time basis for the first time in his career in 2020.
Dunn held up pretty well for a rookie with an ERA of 4.34 and WHIP. I don’t think there was anything to be too concerned about for the 25-year-old. He has been rock solid to open this season as well. Dunn has posted an ERA of 3.98 and 1.28 WHIP through 20.3 innings of work. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 earned runs in any start yet. If Dunn can keep it that way and stay on the hill for 5 or 6 innings, the Mariners should have a decent chance of winning this. I’m not confident in Lopez staying hot after finding success against the Yankees. I like the Mariners to tie this series up.
