Brutal couple of days for the New York Yankees against the determined Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees have dropped their last two games by scores of 6-1 and 3-1. The offense decided to take a couple days off, while the Rays were able to neutralize the Yankee bats. The Yankees had the bases loaded in the 9th but were able to do nothing with it on Thursday. That’s disappointing for a team with an offense like they have.
It certainly hurts without Aaron Judge in the lineup, but they still have other guys that need to step it up. Blake Snell is not an easy pitcher to hit, and he looked great against the Yanks. However, as a team who has World Series aspirations, they must fight through good pitching. The Yankees fell to 75-46 with the loss and continue to sit well back of the Red Sox in the American League East. They just have to worry about keeping their wildcard and homefield.
Aaron Judge recently had to take a cortisone shot to deal with pain in his wrist, so it appears that his return is going to be pushed back a little longer. The Yankees originally had a three-week timetable on Judge, but that was certainly overly optimistic.
They said they were optimistic about it being an accurate timeline. However, never trust a team when they say they’re optimistic about anything. Newcomer Lance Lynn is scheduled to get the start for the Yankees. Marcus Stroman will counter for the Blue Jays. Stroman has been looking for a good start in what hasn’t been a good year for him. Toronto Blue Jays vs. N.Y. Yankees Pick
Marcus Stroman (4-8, 5.03 ERA) vs. Lance Lynn (8-8, 4.46 ERA)
Marcus Stroman has been waiting to go on a hot run, but it hasn’t arrived for him yet. However, Stroman is coming off a couple of nice starts against the Red Sox and Rays. Holding the Red Sox to only 2 hits across 7 innings of work was his best appearance of the year. This was after the A’s bashed him for 7 runs in 5 innings. He will be happy to find that Aaron Judge won’t be in the lineup this evening.
Judge is hitting .438 with 4 long balls against Stroman, but that bat will obviously be absent from Yankee Stadium. Stroman has faced issues on the road in 2018, with an ERA of 5.33 and 1.56 WHIP compared to 4.70 and 1.26 in the Rogers Centre. After napping against the Rays the last two days, I suspect the offense finds a way to break through against Stroman.
Lynn has been exceptional in his short time with the Yankees. He was not feeling it in Minnesota and the change did him well. Lynn owns a 1.47 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with the Yankees. His ERA is still high at 4.46 as a result of some turbulence with the Twins. He escaped damage against the Rangers in his last outing, as he allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
Lynn managed to hold them to just a run, though. The Blue Jays have done well against Lynn in his career. They’re hitting .333 with 6 long balls in 69 at-bats. Kendrys Morales has done a number on Lynn with 2 home runs in just 4 at-bats, including 3-of-4 hitting. Smoak, Pillar, Hernandez, and Martin are all hitting above .300 against Lynn. I’d look for some runs in this one, so a play on the OVER looks good.
