Blue Jays vs. Yankees Pick MLB – April 9th

The Dodgers may just be 2-1 with a +2 run differential, but they have to be loving life after watching the first two games from Adrian Gonzalez. The slugger seems healthy – he has five home runs in two games including three in his first three at bats last night. The pitching should come around but having a healthy and dialed-in Adrian Gonzalez makes them a different team

Meanwhile, a few surprising teams had perfect opening series. The Atlanta Braves took all three from the chic pick to win the wildcard, Miami Marlins, outscoring the Fish 16-3 in the process, and the Colorado Rockies took all three from the Brewers, outscoring them 20-6. The most encouraging thing for the Rockies is that these wins and huge run totals came on the road, where they have historically struggled. We’ve seen this Rockies movie before – the hot start only to fade miserably after CarGo and Tulo get hurt. It will interesting to see if the Rockies can remain healthy and competitive into the Summer, but it certainly is a great start.

Let’s try to have a great start ourselves and put a Thursday winner on the board.

Daniel Norris vs. C.C. Sabathia

Norris, who will be making just his second start in the big leagues, has been the subject of a lot of fascination among baseball fans and non-sports fans alike. The 21-year old lefty is best known for living in his van in a Walmart parking lot despite a $2 million signing bonus and for night surfing and keeping a thought journal. However, he should be better known for his minor=league leading 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings last season .   I have a feeling today will be a nice introduction to the main stream baseball fan and there’s no better place to announce your arrival than Yankee Stadium.

Opposing him will be another lefty, and the winningest active pitcher in MLB, CC Sabathia. Sabathia has fared well against the Jays historically, going 10-1 with a 2.81 ERA in his last 12 starts. However, it is hard to be remarkably confident in the 34-year old C.C. at this point. His 2013 season was a mess, going 13-14 with a 4.72 ERA and last year he shut it down in May after battling injuries all season long. It is asking a lot of a guy his age with his recent injury history to be the Cy Young candidate we grew accustomed to seeing every season.

The Jays have a lousy recent track record in New York. They are a dreadful 13-40 in the Bronx. However, this is a new year and a new team with a young, dynamic pitcher on the bump. I like them to exercise some demons tonight and to win the rubber game of the opening series.
