We notched an MLB win yesterday, but it wasn’t without a ton of drama. The wager looked safe when Johnny Cueto was lifted with a 5-2 lead, but the Reds middle relief again reared it’s seventh inning woes and gave up three runs to even the game at five apiece. Todd Frazier homered in the ninth to give the ball to Aroldis Chapman with a 6-5 lead. Easy save right?
Not quite. The win wasn’t secure until Chris Heisey tracked down a Clint Barmes bomb one step from the wall with two on and two out in the ninth. It was a nerve-rattler, but a win none the less, and I’ll happily take it. A win is a win, right?
Just ask the Detroit Tigers, who would kill for a win right now. The Royals continued their remarkable surge and now sit a half-game ahead of the Tigers for first place in the AL Central. The Royals have young talent all over the place that baseball insiders have been expecting to breakthrough the last two years. Could this finally be the year they do it? Wake up George Brett Kansas City, good times are here again!
Let’s get to today’s free pick and see if we can cobble together a little winning streak.
Today’s Free Pick:
Toronto Blue Jays -105 at New York Yankees -105 (Total: 9)
Mark Buehrle (10-3, 2.28 ERA) vs. Chase Whitley (10-3, 2.28 ERA)
The Yankees took game one of this series 3-1 last night and are looking for a much-needed third straight win over the divison leading Jays. In order to do it, they are going to have to stop one of the hottest pitchers in MLB in Mark Buehrle. Buehrle is looking for his major league-leading eleventh win tonight and enters with a sparkling 2.28 ERA. The Jays are a remarkable 11-3 in games he has started, meaning Buehrle has factored in all but one decision so far this season. Much of that is due in part to great run support (5.4 runs/game) and much of it is due to his 94.2 innings pitched, which is an average of nearly 7 innings per game.
His opposition is young rookie Chase Whitley, who has brought a nice bit of energy to the team with his fantastic MLB debut. He is looking for his first win at home tonight but will have to shut down one of the top offenses in baseball to do it. I think that’s a lot to ask.
I’ll take the reliably fantastic Buehrle and a high-powered offense to even this series tonight. Add in the near even-money line, and there’s nice value today with the Jays.
