Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles MLB Pick – August 23, 2020

Zack Godley (0-2, 6.87 ERA) vs. Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 7.89 ERA)

The Boston Red Sox were unable to set up an opportunity for a sweep today after they were edged out on Saturday. The Red Sox were 5-4 losers in extra innings. Boston scored in the top half of the 10th, but the Orioles responded with a couple of runs to end a six-game losing streak.

As hot as the Orioles were earlier in the season, they’ve plateaued and brought back down to earth. Variance isn’t fun for bad teams who are trying to buck expectations. The same is happening to the Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins. They started out well and now are playing like the team we thought they’d be.

In any case, the Orioles were able to put a win up on the board Saturday to advance to 13-14 on the season. If you were to say that the O’s would be flirting with the .500 mark at this point in the season, then that’d be seen as a major success.

And despite the six-game skid, I’d say that 2020 has been nice to the Orioles. You can’t really expect too much out of the Orioles during a rebuilding phase. At least there have been a few encouraging signs for the future.

When it comes to the Red Sox, we expected them to be bad and they’ve been bad. The Red Sox head into Sunday with a lousy record of 9-19 for dead last in the AL East. Chris Sale is working hard in rehab to try to get back on the hill after Tommy John surgery.

Eduardo Rodriguez is done for the year because of complications from Covid-19, so that leaves Nathan Eovaldi at the top of the rotation. Eovaldi is alright, but he’s far from a No. 1 pitcher. Martin Perez and Zack Godley aren’t aces either.

If you were expecting anything less than a bad season from the Red Sox with that pitching staff, then you were probably just blinded by past success and their name. Zack Godley is scheduled to get the start for the Red Sox, while Wade LeBlanc counters for the O’s. Get our free Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles pick for August 23, 2020 below.

Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles Prediction:

The Red Sox are hoping to see something out of Zack Godley on Sunday. There haven’t been many positives for the 30-year-old who has spent time with the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks as well. Godley has been getting pounded for a 6.87 ERA and 1.85 WHIP through 18.1 innings. Not really much of a surprise for Godley, as he’s been trending in the wrong direction since recording a 3.37 ERA in his first full season in the majors in 2017. The Diamondbacks were confident in Godleys future in the organization, but his career took a quick turn in the wrong direction.

Godley notched an ERA of 4.74 two years ago and then a 5.97 ERA between the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays last season. The Diamondbacks tried to be patient with Godley, but his form from 2017 has been non-existent. Hitters caught on to him pretty quickly and now he is going to have to refine his game or a trip to South Korea to play in the KBO might be in his future. Godley heads into Camden Yards with an ERA of 6.87 after surrendering 9 earned runs in his last 7 innings.

There have been some positives with Godley, though. It hasn’t all been ugly. Godley is coming off a nice performance versus the Phillies, as he allowed 1 earned run through 4 innings. Batters are now hitting .333 against Godley on the season. There is also some good news for Godley and his matchup against Wade LeBlack today. He should be able to out pitch LeBlanc, who has been unable to last more than four innings. The O’s have had no choice but to pull LeBlanc early in his starts.

LeBlanc has been smacked for a 7.89 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through five games and 21.2 innings. He’s coming off another poor effort on August 18 versus the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays got to LeBlanc for 5 hits and 5 earned runs in 4 innings. He’s allowed fewer than 3 runs in a start just once in 2020. Either Godley or LeBlanc is going to get roughed up badly today. Maybe it ends up being both, but I could see one team racking up the runs on the scoreboard. I’d lean towards the OVER in a high-scoring contest Sunday afternoon.
