Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees MLB Pick – May 30

The MLB has ten games up on the board for Thursday. One of the matchups set to go down will be the always anticipated game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. These two teams have a good rivalry and I expect both teams to look to earn a big win on May 30. This game is set to begin at around 7:00 PM Eastern time.

The Red Sox have earned a record of 29-27 to this point in the season. Boston is in third place of the AL East behind the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox will need to find a way to turn it around if they want to defend their World Series title. Boston is coming off a three game series against the Cleveland Indians that they went 1-2 against.

New York has put up an impressive 36-19 record so far this season, which puts them in the top spot in the AL East. The Rays are right behind them in the standings, so the Yankees will look to create some distance with a good series against the Red Sox. New York put up a 2-1 record in their three-game series against the San Diego Padres and they will look to build off of that.

These two teams have been able to earn winning records to this point in the season, but it has been the Yankees that have been the better team overall. Boston will look to try and steal some games in this four-game series as the Red Sox look to try and climb back into the playoff picture before it gets later in the season.

Previous Matchups

The Red Sox and the Yankees have only had one other series to this point of the season, and it was back on April 16-17, where New York hosted both games. The first game of the series stayed scoreless through the first two innings. In the third inning though, D.J. LeMahieu and Luke Voit both batted in runs and the Yankees never looked back. Mike Tauchman had four runs batted in, while James Paxton and Joe Harvey combined for a total of three hits allowed as New York won 8-0.

The second game between these two teams was much tighter. Boston got it started in the first inning as J.D. Martinez got it started with a home run. Christian Vazquez had a two-run home run in the top of the second to make it 3-0 Red Sox. New York was able to score at the bottom of the fourth but took over in the bottom of the seventh. Brett Gardner hit a grand slam to give the Yankees the 5-3 lead, which they held on to win by.

New York was able to sweep the first two games against the Red Sox this season and will look to put up another good performance in front of their home fans in this series. The Yankees have one of the best attendances in the league and they will look for their fans to give them the edge as they take on Boston on Thursday night.

Chris Sale will likely get the start on the mound for Boston on Thursday night. Sale has struggled at times throughout this season. He has put up an ERA of around 4.19, which is not terrible. Sale has a WHIP of 1.059, which is also solid. Sale has not been able to get the wins though, putting up a 1-6 record.

I expect J.A. Happ to get the start for the Yankees against the Red Sox. Happ has a record of 4-3 this season, but his numbers have not been fantastic. He has an ERA of 5.09 and a WHIP of around 1.234. He is only averaging 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings, in comparison to Sale’s 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Happ will need to up his game for Saturday night’s matchup.

These two pitchers have had their share of struggles, but on a statistical level, Sale has had the better season. The Red Sox will look for this to give them the advantage against the Yankees in the first of four games in a row. Sale struggled going up against the Yankees earlier in the season and will look to try and clean up his game this time around.

Pick Overview

New York has been the better team throughout this season, and they will look for this to propel them to a big victory on Thursday night. The Yankees will need their pitcher to put up a strong performance, while they find a way to solve Sale early. If they can get past their recent injury struggles, I believe that they will find a way to pull off the win.

BetOnline has Boston listed as a -156, which implies that they will win this game around 61 percent of the time. The Red Sox have struggled a bit throughout this season and recently and I believe New York could take advantage. The Yankees are having their own injury issues, but I believe that they could overcome them for a big win at home in the first game of four straight between the two teams. I think New York has a lot of value as such a big underdog in this matchup.
