It’s a fun day for National League pitching matchups with a bunch of aces; current and former, taking the ball this afternoon and evening. Stephen Strasburg (5-1, 3.28 ERA) takes the mound at home for the first-place Nationals, Zack Greinke (6-2, 2.82 ERA) gets the ball in Milwaukee against Chase Anderson, Gerrit Cole and Zach Wheeler square off at PNC Park as the Mets visit the Pirates, Adam Wainwright will try to help the Cardinals bounce back from a 10-0 loss last night at Coors Field, and, even though I am not on the AL beat, it’s hard to ignore Dallas Kuechel at 7-0 with a 1.81 ERA tonight in Houston…
Most of us here in the States are enjoying a nice long weekend, so how better to spend it that catching some baseball! There’s some great games to choose from tonight – here’s my personal favorite line.
Today’s MLB Pick:
Atlanta Braves +115 at San Francisco Giants -125 (Total: 7.5)
Mike Foltynewicz (3-4, 3.86 ERA) vs. Ty Blach (2-2, 4.10 ERA)
Ty Blach’s numbers might not jump off the page, but the young hurler has been excellent of late and has been dazzling at home all season long. He has allowed just six runs in his last three starts, spanning 21 innings in perfect seven inning each distribution. He has delivered a quality start in four of five games since moving from the pen to the starting rotation. His HOME ERA this season has been even better, posting a 1.86 ERA at AT&T Park, including several relief appearances.
Facing him is the Braves 25-year old promising starter who has also been dealing lately, allowing just five runs in his last three outings. His ERA is almost identical to Blach as he lasted fewer innings in those starts, tallying just 16 total. Neither pitcher is an overwhelming strikeout guy, averaging about a strikeout every two innings, but neither walks many batters either. Both are right in the 3:1 range. Expect some balls to be hit tonight, but if recent trends hold, not hit particularly dangerously. However, over time, batted balls tend to find some holes and some runs score. Foltynewicz has an opponent batting average of .279 – relatively high for someone with otherwise good stats, which indicates he might be a little “lucky” with his recent excellent results.
Blach at home has been an excellent bet, so I will ride the trend tonight.
San Francisco is a good value at -125 at home against a mediocre team (at best).
Today’s MLB Pick: San Francisco Giants to WIN -125
