We hit a nice winner with the St. Louis Cardinals RL last night. It didn’t start off easy, as pitcher Wily Peralta of the Brewers had a no-hitter going for himself in the first-half of the game. The Cardinals broke through in the in the latter stages of the game, compiling 4 runs heading into the top of the 9th, when the Brewers made it interesting tacking on 2 runs of their own. The Cardinals held on for the victory though, while cashing our RL ticket.

Atlanta Braves -105 at Miami Marlins -115 (Total: 6.5)
Mike Minor (13-6, 3.06 ERA) vs. Jose Fernandez (11-6, 2.23)
If you were to tell someone that Mike Minor and Jose Fernandez were going to be among baseballs elite come September, then I’m pretty sure that person would call you a little crazy. But fast forward to September, and I think it’s safe to say that Minor and Fernandez are amongst the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.
Minor who is another steady option in the Braves’ rotation, has flourished in 2013, posting an ERA of 3.06 with a 13-6 record. I wouldn’t go as far to say Minor is an elite pitcher, but he is one of the better ones you will find today. He is a big reason for why the Braves are at where they are at this point in time. If you look at just his ERA in his last three starts you’ll see a solid 3.00, but if you look deeper you will find an outstanding WHIP of 0.86. So, Minor doesn’t put many on base, an issue that could hurt the Marlins in this game, who have trouble finding the bases anyway. They are also abysmal against left-handed pitching at .227. Minor is also excellent on the road in 2013, holding an ERA of only 2.42. I think that continues in Miami.
Fernandez on the other hand I can deem to be elite, and I think he is going to be elite for years to come. He is mowed down the entire league and is looking to continue that against one of the Major League Baseball’s best teams. The Braves are a team, typically, that have succeeded due to their pitching, they have won plenty of ugly looking 2-1, 3-2 kind of games. Fernandez hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in a single game since July 3rd, when he gave 3 up against the Cardinals. The last time he gave up 4 runs was on May 27th! As you can imagine his numbers recently are fantastic: 0.90 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, and .169 OBP in his last three starts.
I think you know where I’m going with this pick. Neither pitchers allow any runners to get on the base pads, which of course is the reason why their ERA’s are so good. The Marlins have essentially packed it up for 2013 and are just looking forward to vacation. I expect Minor to have his way with the Marlins and Fernandez should continue to do what he’s been doing all season long.
