The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets will meet for Game 2 of their four-game series on Friday night. The Braves got the party started with a 4-2 victory over the Mets on Thursday. There were some grumblings that the Mets were going to trade one of their pitchers. Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler in particular were floated around as potential bait. They ended up staying at the deadline, but we’ll see what happens with them in the future.
It would have taken something so massive that the Mets absolutely couldn’t have turned an offer down for Jacob deGrom. Otherwise, they are going to keep a guy who is on pace to win a Cy Young this season. Syndergaard hasn’t shown the ability to stay healthy, so he would have been easier to send packing.
It was a big win for the Braves last night, as they were able to stay within a half a game of the Phillies. The Phils and Nationals won as well on Thursday, so everybody stayed still. Wins and losses don’t mean much for the Mets at this juncture. They are 15 games out of 1st in the NL East, which also means they are removed from the postseason picture.
With the win yesterday, the Braves have won four in a row. This was after they lost four in a row, one against the Marlins and three to the Dodgers. Their four wins here is for the Braves. They could have regressed and fallen back some more, but they got it right back. Anibal Sanchez who has been somewhat of a savior for the Braves will get the start tonight. The Mets will counter with Cy Young candidate, Jacob deGrom. Get our free Braves vs. Mets pick below.
Atlanta Braves vs. N.Y. Mets Pick
Anibal Sanchez (5-3, 3.00 ERA) vs. Jacob deGrom (5-6, 1.82 ERA)
Sanchez has revitalized his career with the Braves in Atlanta. After years of burning a hole in the Tigers’ wallet, they had to let him go. He used to be a pretty reliable pitcher for the Tigers, especially when they had Scherzer and Verlander, but he regressed hard and never recovered. However, as luck has it for some teams, he goes to Atlanta and is pitching his best since 2014 when he finished with an ERA of 3.43.
He isn’t coming off the best start of 2018, though, as the Dodgers hit him for 7 hits and 4 earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. Sanchez enters with a 3.93 ERA in his previous three tilts. The Mets have been average against Sanchez, hitting .248 with 4 long balls in 133 at-bats. With deGrom on the mound, average is usually good enough, though.
The Braves are hitting .235 against deGrom in 170 at-bats. He has never been this hot in his career, though, so these guys will be facing the same guy who gave up just 1 run against them on June 13th. deGrom enters with a stellar 1.66 ERA and 0.88 WHIP at Citi Field this season. The Dodgers have been the only team to score more than 2 runs on him at home.
Atlanta have a decent offense, but it is not on the same level as the Dodgers. The Cy Young favorite has also been sharp recently without many blemishes. He comes into Friday with an ERA of 1.96 and 0.91 WHIP in his previous three starts. -130 doesn’t look like the best of odds, but with deGrom, he isn’t going to get a price like that against a pitcher of Sanchez’s caliber very often. I will trust deGrom to get it done again, with the Mets’ offense doing enough against Sanchez.
