The MLB is set up with another exciting day of baseball as the season gets closer to a close. Sixteen games are up on the board for Friday night. One of the matchups on the board will be between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets. These two teams have had solid seasons and will meet in one final series. This game will start at 7:10 PM Eastern time.
The Braves are heading to the postseason as they have put up a record of 97-62, which has them in first place of the NL East. Atlanta has won four of their last six games and will look to finish out these last three strong. The Braves have already clinched their spot, so some players are sitting, which gives a chance for the Mets to earn a nice home win.
New York has recently been eliminated from the playoffs. The Mets have gone 83-76 to this point in the season, which has them sitting in third place of the NL East. New York has won six of their last nine games, but could not catch up to the Milwaukee Brewers before they clinched. The Mets will look to finish out the season with a strong final three game stretch.
These two division rivals have had quite a few strong games throughout this season. I expect both teams to want to win this series to finish out the regular season. Friday night’s matchup will open up this three game series, which should be a good one to watch over the weekend.
The Braves have hosted ten games in front of their home fans against New York throughout this season. The first series was in Atlanta, where both teams split a four game series. The second series of the season was also in Atlanta, but this time the Braves were able to take the series 2-1. The third series in Atlanta once again went 2-1 in favor of the Braves.
Six games have been in New York between these two teams so far. The Braves were able to take the first series hosted by the Mets 2-1. The second series went even worse for New York as they got swept 3-0. The Mets lost three of those five losses by one run, which shows that they were competing with Atlanta until the end, but ultimately fell short.
The Braves hold an 11-5 edge on the series over New York so far this season. The Mets have been competitive, but cannot finish with the win. New York will look to try and finish out their final home series with their first series win over Atlanta on the year. With the Braves sitting some players with injuries, the door is very much open for the Mets to win some games.
Ozzie Albies has had a strong season for Atlanta, earning 187 hits, 24 home runs and 86 RBI’s. Freddie Freeman has 174 hits, 38 homers, 121 RBI’s and an OPS of .946. Josh Donaldson has put up 140 hits, 37 home runs and 93 RBI’s. Dansby Swanson has 117 hits and 17 homers, while Nick Markakis has 117 hits and 9 home runs. Brian McCann, Trey Flowers, and Austin Riley all have double-digit homers as well.
Amed Rosario has posted 173 hits, 15 home runs and 71 RBI’s on the season. Pete Alonso has broken out this season, earning 152 hits, 51 home runs, 118 RBI’s and an OPS of .943. Michael Conforto has put up 139 hits, 33 home runs and 92 RBI’s. J.D. Davis, Wilson Ramos, and Robinson Cano all have put up over 100 hits and double-digit home run totals on the year.
The Braves are sitting Ronald Acuna Jr. for the remainder of the regular season as he tries and get healthy for the playoffs, which hurts their lineup a bit. Jeff McNeil has been shut down for the season for New York. Both teams have a lot of solid depth throughout their hitting lineup, which should lead to another solid series.
Dallas Keuchel will get the start on the mound for the Braves. Keuchel has gone 8-7 through 18 starts this season. Keuchel has an ERA of 3.59 and a WHIP of 1.328. His last start came against the San Francisco Giants, where he allowed six hits and two earned runs through six innings. Keuchel has lost his last two starts and will look to bounce back in his final start before the postseason.
Marcus Stroman will be the starting pitcher in Friday night’s tilt for New York. Stroman has gone 9-13 through 31 starts, but he has gone 3-2 through ten starts with the Mets. He has a 3.23 ERA and a WHIP of 1.312 on the year. Stroman’s last start was against the Cincinnati Reds, where he allowed three hits and two runs through four and two thirds innings in route to a no decision.
These two pitchers were later season additions for their respective teams, Keuchel through free agency and Stroman through a trade. Both pitchers have helped their clubs quite a bit and they should have a good matchup on Friday night. They both have similar stats on the season, with a slight edge going in favor of Stroman.
These teams match up well as Atlanta has a better hitting lineup, while the Mets have the edge on the mound. I believe that the Braves have a good chance to continue their success against New York on Friday night though. Keuchel has not been great in his last two starts, but I believe that he will come out strong to finish out the year, which could give the edge to Atlanta.
BetOnline has New York listed as a -115 against the money line. This implies that the Mets will win this game around 53.5 percent of the time. I believe that this game should be closer to even or possibly in favor of the Braves. Atlanta has found a lot of success against New York this season and I like this trend to continue. I think the Braves have a lot of value in this game as underdogs, which makes them my pick of the night.
