I love baseball season, but I gotta admit, I love it even more so far this season. Last night’s 2-0 MLB picks drive the season record to a ridiculous 9-0 and +$780.11 for $100 bettors. Again, we’re not predicting a perfect season, but I am looking to see how far we can ride this nice season-starting winning streak.
Yesterday we got a nice OVER cover with the Indians putting up seven runs by theselves after a long rain delay against the Twins, while the Pirates gave us a relaxing easy winner by making mincemeat of the Cardinals in a 12-2 stomp.
Let’s keep the beat rolling tonight with another pair of picks.
Tonight’s Free MLB Picks:
San Diego Padres +130 vs. Florida Marlins -141 (Total: 6.5)
Andrew Cashner (0-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Jose Fernandez (1-0, 1.50 ERA)
Who would have thought a Padres/Marlins game in April would be must-see television? But that is exactly what we have tonight if you love baseball; especially if you love starting pitching. San Diego’s Andrew Cashner got off to a great start to the season, shutting down the Dodgers on Opening Night and earning a no-decision in the Padres win. Meanwhile, Jose Fernandez started right where he left off last season; dominating. His nine K and one walk performance had the league buzzing about his unlimited talent and potential.
The Marlins are off to a 4-1 start, and are looking like a reasonably good baseball team with really good pitching. They are also scoring 7.5 runs per game. However, they are facing a difficult challenge in Cashner tonight. He was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA against the Marlins last year in two starts and he is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last three road starts overall.
Couple Cashner with the nearly-automatic Jose Fernandez and this one has 2-1 written all over it. I’ll take the UNDER tonight, with a slight lean to the Marlins keeping their surprising hot start rolling.
Atlanta Braves +140 at Washington Nationals -145 (Total: 6.5)
Julio Tehran vs. Stephen Strasburg
It’s not that I don’t think Stephen Strasburg is good. It’s just I’m not sure he’s quite as good as this line suggests. Julio Tehran is no slouch, and to be getting +140 on the Braves tonight, it’s too good a value to pass up.
Strasburg got roughed up a bit in his opening outing and we all know he rarely gives you more than six innings. In a bullpen game if it’s close, the Braves have an edge of most everyone in baseball. Strasburg has been good against the Braves in his career, posting a 2.57 ERA in six starts. However the Bravos seem to come out on top more often in this matchup, having taken 18 of their last 24 overall against their division rivals.
This should be a good game, but I’ll take an underdog value play on the Bravos continuing their strong play against Washington and scratching out just enough runs against Strasburg to get a close win.
