We kept the beat rolling last notching an easy win for the eighth MLB winner in nine plays on thesportsgeek.com. This time, the drama was put to bed early as the run total was eclipsed by the third inning thanks to the Brew Crew jumping all over Trevor Bauer. You gotta love games when you have clinched a winner by the third inning, and no other play aside from an OVER in baseball can provide such immediate resolution.
It allowed for plenty of time to soak up other MLB action, including Max Scherzer’s bid for a second straight no-no (he didn’t get it, but it says something about his All Star starter-worthiness when a guy allowing two runs, striking out seven batters against no-walk become a “ho-hum” performance) and the Cardinals continuing to widen the largest division lead in baseball by topping the Cubbies in extra innings. All around, it was a good night of baseball action and we have another nice crop of matchups this afternoon and evening. So without further ado, lets dive into tonight’s free pick.

Today’s Free Pick:
Atlanta Braves +150 at Pittsburgh Pirates -160 (Total: 7)
Julio Tehran vs. Charlie Morton
It isn’t that either starting pitcher has been dominant. In fact, looking at the season numbers it is hard to argue either has even been very good (especially disappointing given the immense talent of Tehran), but I am immediately drawn to the UNDER simply because of the abject lack of offensive prowess tonight.
The Braves have looked listless and punchless, scoring just five runs in their last five games (1-4). They enter tonight hitting respectable .252 and averaging a shade over four runs a game, but lately it has been pretty miserable for the Bravos. The Pirates have been reasonable of late, scoring 16 runs in their last four games, but despite their prodigious winning streak, they have tallied more than three runs in a game just twice in their last ten outings.
Neither team has a ton to fear tonight in the opposing lineup, and I think that bodes well for each starter. Morton should be able to hold the Braves in check and tonight is a perfect night for Tehran to build on some recent momentum and let his electric talent take over. I like him to go deep into the ballgame – something along the seven innings/two run allowed genre.
The UNDER is 11-4 in Pittsburgh’s last fifteen games. I think that trend continues tonight at PNC Park.
