Milwaukee Brewers -120 at Kansas City Royals +113 (Total: 8.5)
Shaun Marcum vs. Luke Hoechevar
It’s pretty easy to forgive even an ardent baseball fan if they are distracted today. After all baseball is a 162-game season, and lasts seemingly forever. The NBA Finals and the US Open are much more glamorous; and temporary, events. So it is no surprise that baseball slides a bit into the background this weekend. But it doesn’t mean there aren’t some great opportunities to profit tonight across the landscape of major league baseball.
Before we get to today’s free pick, I’d be remiss If we didn’t at least touch on last night’s perfecto out in San Francisco. Matt Cain recorded the first perfect game in the Giants storied history, recording 14 strikeouts in the process. In today’s “whatever I saw last is the greatest EVER” media culture, it’s easy to get swept away, but when you consider that Cain tied Sandy Koufax for the most strikeouts ever thrown in a perfect game… and that there have only been 22 perfect games in MLB history, it isn’t ludicrous to make the case for “best game ever pitched.”
And to make things even more bizarre, the Mets have appealed a first inning infield single in last night’s game. It was the only hit given up by R.A. Dickey. Should MLB reverse the official scoring (unlikely), you would have no-hitters thrown on the same night by the two pitchers with the two lowest ERA’s in the National League. GO ahead Elias Sports Bureau, find a date when THAT happened before…
On to tonight’s pick…
It seems odd to say the Royals are in trouble tonight since they are playing at home, but that’s a pretty accurate statement so far this season. They have been the worst home team in all of MLB this season with a dismal 10-21 record at Kauffman Stadium. Oddly as well, it leaves them with a 16-14 record on the ROAD. Tonight they try to complete a three-game sweep (their first home series win of the year) over Milwukaee.
But in order to do so, they are going to need a much better effort from Luke Hoechevar than they have been getting of late. The righty is 0-2 with a 6.47 ERA in his last three outings and is just 3-7 with a 6.57 ERA on the season. That isn’t going to get it done in the major leagues for long.
Milwaukee sends red-hot Shaun Marcum to the hill, who is 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA in his last three outings. It looks like a mismatch to me, and the fact you only have to lay small juice (-120) to get the Brewers tonight seems pretty generous. I am 3-0 in my last three “double-up” picks, and am going the same way tonight. Give me Milwaukee to WIN as my official pick, but I am also going to double-up on the -1.5 run line at +140.
Free Pick: Milwaukee Brewers to WIN -120
