The St. Louis Cardinals were dealt a serious blow last night, as the Milwaukee Brewers handed them another loss at Busch Stadium. It started with a 6-4 loss on Monday night, and then it ballooned into a 12-4 loss a night ago. The Cards have to shake it off and find some wins. There isn’t any time to dwell on what happened the last two days, so it’s time for them to start anew tonight. The Cards had previously gone 6-1 before the Brewers came to town.
Not so fast said the Brewers, who were looking to fend the Cardinals off from grabbing homefield in the Wild Card Game. At that point, the Cardinals and Brewers had the final two spots in the National League. However, as of today, it’s the Rockies and Brewers. The Cardinals have had a piece of a wildcard for over a month now and it looks like they might be throwing it away in the final week. We’ll see, though, they’re only down by 0.5 games.
The worst thing they could do is panic right now. They’re still less than a game away from getting into the postseason, but there is zero room for error with only four games left. It will be a long offseason if they miss out on the postseason. It’s nevertheless been a nice run in St. Louis since Mike Matheny got fired. The Brewers on the other hand couldn’t have asked for more. Jhoulys Chacin will have the opportunity to keep it rolling for the Brewers this evening. He will start on the mound for the Brew, while the Cardinals will counter with John Gant. It will be the most important start of the year for Gant tonight. Head below for our free Brewers vs. Cardinals pick.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals Pick
Jhoulys Chacin (14-8, 3.61 ERA) vs. John Gant (7-6, 3.53 ERA)
John Gant will earn his paycheck this week if he can help the Cardinals out on Wednesday evening. If the Cards lose tonight and the Rockies win again, it’s going to start to get troublesome in St. Louis. With the Rams in Los Angeles now, most fans are putting all of their eggs into the Cardinals’ basket. St. Louis is a baseball town and this would sting there for a while. Gant has been decent enough this season, though. He heads into tonight with an ERA of 3.53 overall and looked good against the Brewers on August 19th, allowing just 2 runs in 4.1 innings. They still lost the game, though, so the offense may want to consider hitting tonight.
The Cardinals have had a favorable history against Chacin, hitting him for 4 long balls and a .384 OBP. Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter, Jose Martinez, and Yadier Molina have all gone deep on Chacin. Adams has been good in particular with a .444 batting average. He was good, though, holding the Cards to no runs in a 2-1 win against Gant in August. The Cardinals have lost three games in a row only two times since July 1st. If there is ever a time to avoid a third time, it would be tonight against the Brewers. With their backs against the walls and facing some adversity, I see the Cards stepping up and putting forth their best effort of the series. They break out of their mini-funk and get back on track tonight.
