Brewers vs. Cardinals Pick – May 4th

We took a slump-buster day off yesterday but are ready to get back to action today on getaway day in Major League Baseball. But before we dive in to today’s matchups, a quick update on where we stand as we close out the first five weeks of MLB action.

Some things are expected; the Nationals and Cubs lead their divisions, the Braves and Padres are struggling, and the Dodgers haven’t looked great, but are still the strong favorite to win the NL West. There are some usual names atop the MVP and Cy Young races; Bryce Harper is off to a spectacular start, Max Scherzer seems to have a mind to defend his crown. And of course, there have been some fun stories as well; Ryan Zimmerman, Eric Thames, the Arizona Diamondbacks. But as we turn the calendar to month two, we shall see who regresses back to the mean and who is here is here to stay.

There’s a nice mix of day and night action today. The Reds and Pirates wrap up a three-game set at 12:30 with Ivan Nova taking his 1.50 ERA to the mound, Max Scherzer is a -260 favorite in the rubber match with the D’Backs, and the Rockies wrap up their set in Petco at 3:40 EST.

My pick focuses on the lone NL evening game, a divisional matchup between the Brewers and Cardinals.

Today’s MLB Pick:

Milwaukee Brewers +138 at St Louis Cardinals -142 (Total: 7.5)

Chase Anderson (2-0, 2.10 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (2-3, 6.12 ERA)

I know. I have written a lot about Adam Wainwright, and even lost once fading him this season. But his story remains an interesting one to me; not just as an impartial baseball fan, but as a bettor. The Cardinals veteran has had a borderline Hall of Fame career. But at 35 years old and multiple surgeries in his recent past, there are some major question marks as to whether he can be a viable big league starter for all of 2017.

He has won two starts in a row. That is encouraging. But his ERA is STILL 6.12 and in the last two starts he allowed six earned runs in 11.2 innings for an ERA over 5.00, so it isn’t like he is out there dominating. His BAT actually saved the day in the pick I dropped as he drove in four runs on his own to help his cause. I doubt Chase Anderson will get similarly touched up tonight.

And Chase is the biggest reason I am loving the underdog value of the Brewers tonight. He enters with a perfect record and a slim 2.10 ERA. He has a WHIP of 1.07 and has had excellent command this season. Milwaukee has clubbed a league-high 47 homeruns so he has the likelihood of getting at least a few runs of support tonight, which to this point has been enough to get the victory.

There are some real weather concerns tonight. This game has already been pushed back from its afternoon scheduled start to 6:10 CST (local time) in hopes of playing baseball, so it is possible we end up with no action on this pick. But if they DO play, and I can get a team hitting better with a starting pitcher pitching WAY better AND I can get a big fat plus-money line? I’m in.

  1. That game was a f’n sweat! I didn’t even realize you guys picked it. I took another bet on the over cause 7.5 seemed REAL low and guess what? Both hit! it was a 4K day on the 4th. That Minnesota over helped as well. Like my man said, let’s ride this into the weekend!
