The Reds jumped all over the Giants early last night, tallying seven runs in the first three innings and chasing away starter Mike Kickham for this third straight disastrous outing. The Reds cruised to an 8-1 win, making the over/under bet of 9 a push, however in most books, the bet is “no action” anyhow considering the game was shortened and called after six innings when the rain began to pour.
It was a day on the treadmill for me personally, no win no loss, so we are in the same spot today; coming off a 4-1 weekend and looking to tally another win. Let’s take a look at a good pitching matchup and a pairing of two immensely talented teams out West for another over/under pick.
St. Louis Cardinals +115 at Los Angeles Angels – 122 (Total: 8)
Lance Lynn (10-2, 3.52 ERA) vs. Jered Weaver (1-4, 4.15 ERA)
Perhaps the Angels season can best be described in the microcosm of Jered Weaver; tons of potential, lots of promise, and disappointing results. He is just 1-4, and the major leagues leader in ERA the past four season has piled up a 4.15 ERA to this point in an injury-riddled season.
He faces off against Lance Lynn, who has pitched well, but his 10-2 record is buoyed a bit by tremendous run support, as his 3.52 ERA is good but not great. His last three starts he is just 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA. It will be interesting to see how he handles the dangerous first at-bats against former teammate, Albert Pujols.
I like the Angels momentum tonight. They enter on a six game winning streak and seem to be joining the Dodgers in a LA baseball renaissance, as both climb back into the place everyone expected them to be before the season. Jered Weaver threw seven great innings in his last outing, beating Doug Fister and a tough Detroit Tigers team. Perhaps he has turned the corner and regained his form. Either way his run support should be there tonight against a scuffling Lance Lynn, and with an offense that has tallied 47 runs in the last seven games.
I don’t see them shelling Lance Lynn however, but I could see Weaver turning out the lights. I think the Angels will rally around Pujols a bit for what is going to be an emotional series (it’s a good thing it is in LA and not St. Louis). I like a good game tonight, and I have a feeling the Angels keep the winning streak alive in a low-scoring affair.
