We capped off a strong long weekend with a fourth winner in five MLB plays to get back on the positive side of the ledger and geared up for a hopefully big summer. The Cubs were far from our most daring play of the season as one of the few bigger favorites I’ve played in a while, but a win is a win, and sometimes it is best not to be greedy and take the wins that present themselves for the offering.
The win capped off the Cubs much-needed sweep of the Cardinals and takes away most of the stench from a disastrous West Coast 0-6 swing. The Brewers still reside in first place in the Central, but will need to fare well against the struggling Giants this week at home, as the Cubs also have a favorable home matchup in the Miami Marlins.
Elsewhere, the NL Central remained tight as a Rockies win and Dodgers loss once again flipped the top spot and a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks pushed the surprising snakes two game back. All three have the day off today before resuming action tomorrow.
Today’s MLB Pick:
St. Louis Cardinals -140 at Cincinnati Reds +132 (Total: 9)
Carlos Martinez (4-4, 3.08 ERA) vs. Asher Wojciechowski (1-0, 5.63 ERA)
What better way to regroup from a three-game sweep than to face a rookie pitcher in his second appearance in one of the most batter-friendly ballparks in baseball. Put your own ace on the mound to boot, and you have a nice recipe for success. The Reds allowed a TON of runs to the Braves, in addition to playing two extra innings games, this weekend and have a taxed bullpen entering the series. Add in a rookie starter, and we could have a long game tonight.
But rather than the low-value of the -140 for the Cardinals, I’ll take the even money of the OVER. The Reds have lost a lot of games, but it hasn’t been their bats’ fault. They are scoring runs, just allowing too many of them as well. I imagine they will have a similar problem tonight. Both of these teams have been predictably allowing the run total to eclipse the line, posting a combined 60-44 OVER mark this season.
I expect some offense tonight. Carlos Martinez may be the Cardinals #1 starter, but he has been far from dominant this season. He was great in his last start and has a career 3.38 ERA against the Reds. It’s is Asher W’s first start in the bigs.
Today’s MLB Pick: RUN TOTAL OVER 9
