The St. Louis Cardinals attempt to avoid a sweep against the Kansas City Royals today. It isn’t often the Cardinals get totally dominated and swept by an opposing team, but the Royals can do that today with a victory. The Cards will send ace Michael Wacha to the mound to face Yordano Ventura, a pitcher that is supposed to blossom into an ace for the Royals. He’s had his moments, just not enough moments to say he has the ability to take control of the starting rotation. Him turning into a top pitcher would do wonders for the Royals. The Royals are already a good team, but that occurring would give them a huge boost to overcome the current mountain they are trying to get over. Last season was represented by one of the best years in franchise history with a run to the World Series. People believed that the Royals were the team of destiny and they were going to nab it, but of course that wasn’t the case. The Royals just got hot at the right time. It’ll be interesting to see if they can come close to duplicating that success here in 2015. Like I said, that comes down to getting outstanding performances out of Yordano Ventura.
The Cardinals have seen better days than the ones they’re seeing in Kansas City. The Cards do have some hardware to show for their World Series appearance, so in reality the Cardinals are the real winners. Not for sports bettors, though. If you’ve been playing the Cards throughout this series you’re bankroll has seen better days. However, with the undefeated Wacha on the mound for the Cardinals, they look to avoid the sweep.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals
Michael Wacha (6-0, 2.13 ERA) vs. Yordano Ventura (3-3, 5.36 ERA)
The Cardinals are off to a terrific start to the season despite their troubles with the Royals in this series. They are also off to a terrific start to the season despite being without the services of Adam Wainwright in the rotation. I don’t think it is going to severely hurt them in the regular season, they’ll be in the postseason I believe. However, it’ll hurt come October with no Wainwright. Wacha has done everything the Cardinals have asked of him though, and will definitely be in the market for a big pay raise after once again rising up to the occasion. Wacha enters today with a 2.13 ERA overall and 1.05 WHIP. I still don’t see much respect for him from odds makers. I see it all the time and I see it again today.
Ventura shouldn’t be a favorite against Wacha today. I understand the issues the Cardinals have had with the Royals in this series, but I also understand that Wacha hasn’t had the chance to pitch yet. The Cardinals hit righties better than left-handers, as they are hitting .266 against right-handers. What I see here is Wacha outpitching Yordano in this game to break a Royals five game winning streak. I like this pick especially due to the price we are being given in this spot.
