The Chicago Cubs are in the desert for a three-game series at Chase Field. They are coming off a three-game series in San Diego against the Padres.

Their trip to San Diego went pretty well with a series win. The Cubs won two of three games, including the rubber match on Wednesday, 7-5.
Keegan Thompson lasted 4 innings with 5 hits and 2 earned runs allowed. The offense took care of the rest of the work, as they punched Nick Martinez for 4 hits and 5 earned runs.
The Cubs aren’t where they’d like to be at this point in the season, though. They enter Chase Field with 11-19 and eight games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the lead in the NL Central.
Chicago has six losses in their previous eight attempts. They haven’t gotten off to a hot start, but there weren’t too many expectations for them in 2022.
The Diamondbacks are off to a promising start this season after a disastrous campaign in 2021. They finished at 52-110 and last in the National League.

They’re off to a 17-15 start this season. I don’t think it comes as too much of a surprise. The Diamondbacks have had some young talent brewing in their minor league system.
This is a season about progress, and then perhaps in the next two years, the Diamondbacks are going to compete again. Arizona will send Zach Davies to the bump while Drew Smyly counters for the Cubs.

Cubs vs. Diamondbacks Prediction:
The Cubs are looking to get more productivity out of Drew Smyly tonight. Smyly has been fine going into Friday night. He enters with an ERA of 3.04 and a 1.23 WHIP through five games.
Smyly is going into Chase Field with an ERA of 5.14 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in his previous three attempts. He doesn’t have a win with a record of 0-3 during that time against the Dodgers, Braves, and Pirates.
Smyly allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs through 4.1 innings of work in his latest start. This was a tough assignment versus the Dodgers, so Smyly didn’t have it easy.
Zach Davies has been tough on hitters this season. He’s been on fire in his most recent outings.
The former Milwaukee Brewer enters with an ERA of 3.34 and a 1.21 WHIP.

- OVER is 4-1-2 in their previous seven games as an underdog
Davies has been on fire with just 6 hits and no runs allowed in his previous two games. He went 11.1 innings without allowing a run in those performances.
The Cubs are hitting .122 with 3 home runs against Davies in 84 at-bats. He played for the Cubs in 2021 and would like to show them up in this one.
Davies posted an ERA of 5.78 and a 1.60 WHIP last season after having success with the Padres and Brewers. The Cubs quickly gave up on Davies following that campaign.
He has a good history against this lineup, so Davies may not need the motivation. I’m on the D-backs to open this three-game tilt with a win at home over the Cubs.
