Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers Pick – MLB May 14, 2021

The Chicago Cubs are in Detroit at Comerica Park for a three-game interleague series against the Tigers. The Cubs enter Detroit with a record of 17-19 after going 0-3 in their last three outings. They’re coming off a 2-1 loss against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday. After failing to sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 6-5 loss, the Cubs were swept in a two-game interleague series against the Indians.

This was following a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cubs looked great at Wrigley Field with a 7-1, 4-3, and 6-5 win to send the Dodgers packing with no wins in their trip to Wrigley. That was a tough series for the Dodgers, but the Cubs were able to pick up some confidence against a quality opponent. It carried over to their next series versus the Pirates. However, that confidence has been lost over their last three performances.

There was some recent good and bad news on the injury front for the Cubs. Kris Bryant was hit in the left hand on a pitch against the Indians. It led to a left wrist contusion for Bryant. The good news is that it’s not as serious as it could have been. He avoided breaking his wrist or hand, and is only dealing with a bruise. Bryant could play on Friday night, and is listed as questionable on the injury report. The Tigers are on a heater at the moment with four straight wins.

They beat the Minnesota Twins in the series finale on Saturday, and then were very impressive in a sweep of the Kansas City Royals. The 2nd inning is all the Tigers needed to dispatch the Royals. They scored 4 runs and leaned on their pitching staff to get the win. The Royals scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th to make it interesting, but the comeback attempt came up just short. Spencer Turnbull turned in a solid performance with just 1 earned run allowed through 6.1 innings.

Tarik Skubal will look to keep the Tigers hot on Friday night. Skubal, Turnbull, and Casey Mize combine for what the organization is hoping to see a nice trifecta in the rotation. There has been growing pains, though, especially to Skubal and Mize who were heavily hyped in their arrival to the major leagues. Veteran Jake Arrieta is scheduled to counter for the Cubs. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Tigers pick on May 14, 2021.

Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers MLB Betting Odds:

  • Cubs -1.5 (+115)
  • Tigers +1.5 (-135)

  • Cubs -130
  • Tigers +120

  • Over 8.5 (-116)
  • Under 8.5 (-104)

Cubs vs. Tigers Prediction:

The Tigers absolutely need Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal to come around, and become the pitchers they were expected to be when drafted. Both have shown why the Tigers think highly of them in spots, but consistency has been a major problem. Skubal has never been able to settle in through two years. He is coming off a mediocre season in his first season in the major leagues.

Skubal posted an ERA of 5.63 and 1.22 WHIP through 32 innings of work. He appeared once out of the bullpen and made seven starts in his first taste of the majors. After getting his feet wet, there were expectations that Skubal was going to break out in 2021. However, at least so far, that hasn’t been the case for Skubal. He goes into Friday night with an ERA of 5.67 and 1.59 WHIP in 27 innings.

Through his last three outings, Skubal has netted an ERA of 6.75 and 1.59 WHIP. He conceded 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings, which sounds pretty alright for Skubal. However, Skubal was already up to 96 pitches after 5 innings of work. Also note that Skubal has given up 5 home runs across his last two starts in 8 innings. If we want to go back to three outings ago, Skubal has allowed 6 home runs through 10.2 innings. Overall, he’s already allowed 10 home runs in 27 innings. That’s much too high.

Jake Arrieta is coming off a poor performance, though it’s his first bad start of the season. Arrieta was rolling with fewer than 3 runs in four of his first five outings in 2021. He allowed 2 earned runs in 11 innings before his showing versus the Reds. Something went astray for Arrieta in his most recent performance. He was rocked for 7 hits and 7 earned runs in 3.1 innings. Despite the poor start, I have confidence in Arrieta bouncing back to form against Detroit.

The Tigers are 29th in the majors with 3.64 runs scored per game. They’re also 27th with a .219 batting average and 25th with 0.96 home runs per contest. Arrieta has been hot against this lineup in his career. They are hitting .188 with 1 home run in 20 at-bats. This looks like a “get right” start for Arrieta, and the Cubs in general after losing three in a row. The Cubs likely figure it out against the Tigers on Friday night.
