The MLB is set up with a total of fifteen games on Friday, which means that all major league teams will be in action. One of the games will be between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. These two teams are on opposite sides of the division, which could lead to an interesting game. This matchup is going to start at around 8:15 PM Eastern time.
The Cubs put up a record of 31-23 so far this season, which has them in the first place of the NL Central. Chicago is coming off a nice win against the Houston Astros but had lost three games in a row before that win. The Cubs will look to build on and start a winning streak with a victory against the Cardinals on Friday night.
St. Louis is currently sitting in fourth place of the NL Central to this point in the season with a record of 26-28. The Cardinals won against the Philadelphia Phillies in their last game, but like Chicago, had lost three games in a row before that. St. Louis will look to earn two wins at home in this series to try and pull themselves to an even record.
The Cubs and the Cardinals will meet in the first game of a three-game series between the two. Both teams are competing in the NL Central, which should help lead to a competitive and good matchup between them. Chicago has been the better team to this point in the season, which I believe that they will look to help lead them to a win over St. Louis.
These two teams have met up a total of three times throughout this season. In the first game between these two teams, both teams kept it scoreless throughout the first two innings. In the bottom of the third though, Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run home run to give the Cubs the lead. Kyle Hendricks allowed four hits in nine innings as Chicago pulled off with a 4-0 win at home.
The second game of the series went back and forth early. The Cardinals held a lead early up 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Davis hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth through to tie it up at 5-5. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the eighth when Javier Baez hit a home run to give the Cubs a 6-5 win.
In the third and most recent game between the Cubs and the Cardinals, it was not nearly as close as the previous matchups. With a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Chicago was able to put the game on ice. Kris Bryant hit a grand slam for the second straight night to lead the way to a six-point inning. The Cubs then finished with a 13-5 win to finish out the series.
With three games in the books between these two, they will see a good amount more of each other here as they play six times in the next two weeks. Chicago dominated the early three-game series, which was a bit surprising since it was during the Cardinals strong start to the season. St. Louis has struggled since and will look to get some revenge on Friday night.
Yu Darvish will start on the mound for the Cubs. Darvish had a rough time when he played last against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed twelve hits and six earned runs in seven innings pitched. Overall this season he has an ERA of 5.40 and a WHIP of 1.618. Darvish has not been great this season the Chicago will look for him to bounce back in this matchup.
Miles Mikolas will be on the mound to begin the game for St. Louis on Friday night. Mikolas has an ERA of 4.76 throughout this season. He also has a WHIP of 1.171, which is solid. Mikolas last played against the Atlanta Braves, where he had seven hits off of him, three earned runs and nine strikeouts in seven innings played.
These two pitchers have had their ups and downs throughout this season so far. Mikolas has been better stat wise but has struggled with getting the wins. Darvish will need to bounce back in a big way for the Cubs to help them take the first game on the road. If the Cardinals can chase him early, it could help give them a good chance to a win.
St. Louis will host the next three games between these two teams and will look to get the series started with a win. The Cardinals will look for their advantage on the pitching mound to give them the edge, but I do not think it will. Mikolas has not been great in his last few games and I believe that the Cubs could have a solid outing against him.
BetOnline has St. Louis listed as a -129 against the money line, which implies that the Cardinals will win this game around 56 percent of the time. I believe that this is too large of a line for this game. Chicago has been the better team this season, and while St. Louis has the edge between the pitchers, I believe the Cubs can overcome this for a win on the road.
