The Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox are scheduled to clash at Guaranteed Rate Park for the second meeting in two days. This is a four-game series in Chicago, which opened with a 4-3 win for the White Sox on Monday night. Adam Eaton had a big night, as he 3 RBI with one swing of the stick. That was the difference in the ballgame. Well, an error in the 9th inning ended up being the final blow to the Indians.
In a tight 3-3 game, Nick Madrigal scored in the bottom half of the inning to end the game before things went to extra innings. The win evens the White Sox up at 5-5 on the season. It hasn’t been a picture perfect start for the White Sox this season. For a team that many people like to go to the World Series, a .500 record through ten games isn’t going to impress anybody.
Fortunately, the first ten games of the season don’t always tell how the rest of the season is going to do. There are some teams that completely bury themselves in the first month and catch up, but as long as the White Sox stay steady, they are likely going to go on a run at some point. I’m not as high as some people have the White Sox, but certainly the talent is there to threaten for the AL Central and play better than .500 baseball.
Beyond that, let’s see what the White Sox do when the trade deadline comes up to make their team better for the postseason. They might be a tad overrated with regard to the World Series as things stand now, though. I’m not running to the window to bet the White Sox to the World Series at their current odds. The Lance Lynn trade was meant to make the White Sox better, and the veteran is going to help, but Dane Dunning has looked good in Texas so far and he’s a much younger arm. That might come back to hurt in the future.
The Indians are off to a 5-4 this season. They couldn’t shake the White Sox last season, and both teams finished deadlocked at 35-25 on the season. The Indians and White Sox finished a game back of the Minnesota Twins for the AL Central crown. It’s going to be another wide-open race in this division. We have a star-studded pitching matchup on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Park. Aces Shane Bieber and Lucas Giolito are scheduled to get the starting nods. Head below for our free Indians vs. White Sox pick on April 13, 2021.
Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago White Sox MLB Betting Odds:
Indians vs. White Sox Prediction:
Shane Bieber and Lucas Giolito will put on a show between two of the best pitchers in the AL Central tonight. Bieber is coming off a breakout season with the Indians. It was only 12 starts, but Bieber was more than deserving of the American League Cy Young. Bieber posted an ERA of 1.63 and 0.87 WHIP through 77.1 innings of work.
He gave up just 7 home runs and 14 earned runs through 12 games. What wasn’t so hot was his performance in the postseason, though. With the Indians counting on a big outing from Bieber, he faltered hard with a 13.50 ERA and 2.36 WHIP in 4.2 innings. He welted under the pressure, but it was good for the experience anyway.
Bieber enters tonight with an ERA of 3.65 and 1.22 WHIP through 12.1 innings. He gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs against the Tigers in the opener. The most concerning thing from that performance was his command, and it wasn’t fixed in his next start against the Royals. Bieber walked 3 batters versus the Tigers, and then had control issues with 4 walks versus the Royals.
Bieber allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs in that start. Note that the Tigers and Royals don’t have the most dangerous offenses in the majors. Neither are bad, but Bieber is going to see more talent on Tuesday night against the White Sox. He has not gotten through the White Sox easily in his career. The White Sox have connected for 6 home runs and 9 RBI in 63 at-bats versus Bieber.
Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu have both mauled Bieber for at least a .300 batting average and a total of 5 home runs combined in 24 at-bats. Bieber has looked vulnerable this season, as he faces the tricky task of matching what he did last season. The White Sox should be able to have some success, at least enough to give Giolito some run support to work with. Cleveland is hitting .169 with a .234 OBP against Giolito in 85 at-bats.
Giolito has looked ordinary this season with an ERA of 4.22 through two starts against the Angels and Mariners. However, he did do a good job of keeping the bases relatively clean, with a 0.84 WHIP to open the season. Note that both starts were on the road. In his first start at Guaranteed Rate Field, expect Giolito to come up with a productive performance. The White Sox at home with Giolito on the bump at this price looks too good to ignore. This looks like solid value.
