Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Pick – MLB June 10, 2022

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres are set up for a four-game series at Coors Field. The Rockies are coming off two of three wins following a 4-2 win yesterday. Austin Gomber was in good shape, with 5 hits and 2 earned runs allowed.

The Rockies have an uphill battle in front of them if they’re going to be competitive in the NL West. Spoiler: it’s not happening anytime soon as long as the Dodgers and Padres are around. Maybe the Giants will regress some over the next few years, but the Dodgers and Padres aren’t going anywhere.

The biggest roadblock stopping the Rockies is attracting star pitchers to Coors Field. They have to do it the old fashioned way and do it all through their minor league development. Yeah, the Rockies can sign free agent pitchers, but attracting elite arms is tough.

It will come at an inflated price if they do want an elite starter. It’s hard to compete with what the Dodgers and Padres can offer.

The Rockies are 25-32 and 12 games behind the Dodgers.

It’s all Padres and Dodgers at the moment, with the Dodgers having a two-game advantage on San Diego going into Friday. The Padres are 35-22 going into tonight.

The Rockies have a tough offensive assignment against Joe Musgrove. Musgrove is on fire and in Cy Young territory. The former Pirate hasn’t lost a game entering this one.

Musgrove is in the best form of his career after a career-high in his first season with the Padres last year. Chad Kuhl is a former Buc, pitching pretty well with his new team as well.

Rockies vs. Padres Prediction:

The Rockies are getting the most out of Chad Kuhl this season. Kuhl never had an ERA below 4.00 in his five years with the Pirates.

His best season was an ERA of 4.20 as a rookie in 2016. Kuhl is well on pace to break that mark.

The odd thing is that he’s doing it with the Rockies. A change of scenery and new pitching coaches has appeared to help him out nicely. Kuhl is going into tonight with an ERA of 3.17 and a 1.26 WHIP.

This is pitching well at Coors Field, too. Kuhl has an ERA of 3.13 and a 1.39 WHIP across 33.1 innings. Do I have as much confidence in Kuhl as I do Musgrove keeping this rolling? No.

Kuhl has still had some inconsistent spots this season. He allowed 7 hits and 5 earned runs through 4.2 innings on May 11 to the San Francisco Giants and followed up with 8 hits and 5 earned runs in 3 innings on May 17.

Since then, Kuhl has notched a 1.62 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

However, those three teams were the Pirates, Nationals, and Braves. The only team on the list that is dangerous is the Braves, while taking care of the Bucs and Nats isn’t a shocker.

Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 1-11 overall in their previous 12 games after a win
  • 2-9 overall in their previous 11 first game of a series
  • 8-23 overall in their previous 31 games as an underdog
  • 3-8 overall in their previous 11 games versus a team with a winning record
  • 8-19 overall in their previous 27 games versus the NL West

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games
  • 6-0 overall in their previous six games on a Friday
  • 7-1 overall in their previous eight games after scoring 5 or more runs
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games versus a team with a losing record
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games after conceding 2 or fewer runs

  • Kuhl has been hot, but Musgrove’s arm has been on fire this season. Apparently, he is looking for a Cy Young as Musgrove carries an ERA of 1.64 and a 0.92 WHIP across 66 innings of work.

Musgrove is going into tonight with an ERA of 0.43 and a 0.90 WHIP in his previous three starts.

It hasn’t mattered where Musgrove has been pitching this season; he’s been good everywhere. That includes Petco Park, where Musgrove owns an ERA of 1.73 and a 0.88 WHIP.

The Rockies are hitting .221 against Musgrove in 66 at-bats. They haven’t seen Musgrove this season and most certainly not in his current electric form.

Once the ball goes over to the Rockies’ bullpen, this is when things could get muddy. Just the Reds are worse than the Rox. They have an ERA of 4.95 and a 1.44 WHIP.

The Rockies should hang around early. No surprise if this is a close one going into the 5th inning, but the Padres should pull away. I like San Diego to win by at least 2 runs to cover the runline.
