The Detroit Tigers stole one from the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park last night. They edged the Cubs out by a score of 2-1, which was one of the better wins the Tigers have had this season. It doesn’t mean anything to them, but it certainly impacts the Cubs. The Cubbies are in possession of 1st in the NL Central at the moment. The Brewers trail in 2nd and will have to outplay the Cubs in September to have a chance.
A few more losses to bad teams and the Brewers might have a case. However, they lost to a bad team last night as well. The Reds won an entertaining one on Tuesday night to prevent the Brewers from moving closer to the Cubs. It was a missed opportunity for the Brew Crew who were fortunate enough to see the Cubs lose to a bad Tigers squad.
The Cardinals are beginning to heat up and they might be the team to look out for. They have a ton of momentum and are looking to strike. With the Cards recent surge, the Cubs have two teams to look out for. It’s going to be one wild ride in September in the National League Central.
The Cardinals are making a claim that they deserve to be included in the postseason picture down the stretch. The Cubs will send Jon Lester out on the mound Wednesday in Detroit. Lester bounced back to make a strong showing in his last start. He looked awfully off for a couple of weeks before he found a groove against the Pirates. Lester will look to duplicate it against the Tigers this evening. Francisco Liriano will counter for the Tigers. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Tigers pick.
Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers Pick
Jon Lester (13-5, 3.72 ERA) vs. Francisco Liriano (3-8, 4.72 ERA)
People were starting to wonder whether Jon Lester had an underlying injury bothering him or something. Lester did not look like an ace of his ball club over the course of three starts, beginning on July 31st against the Pirates. He allowed 4 runs to them and then followed it up with 5 runs allowed against the Padres.
Worry started to occur after he got blasted for 8 runs in the very next start vs the Nationals. One more bad start and Cubs management would have been sweating profusely, especially without Yu Darvish available. Darvish is officially done for the year, as they shut him down through the regular season and postseason. At least the Cubs know the direction they will be going in now.
Lester was flawless in his last outing, though. He stymied the Pirates for no runs across 6 innings of action. It wasn’t enough to help his recent numbers out, as he enters today with a 7.98 ERA in his previous three starts thanks to that disaster against the Nats.
I think we witnessed the real Lester against the Pirates, though. He also gets a creampuff lineup tonight. The Tigers are 27th with 2.87 runs per game. Lester is better on the road with an ERA of 3.18 and 1.19 WHIP in 2018. Liriano enters this evening with a 6.94 ERA, 2.14 WHIP, and .433 OBA in his previous three starts. He’s also posted a 5.13 ERA and 1.56 WHIP at Comerica. His numbers have regressed significantly in night starts as well. During the day he holds a 3.60 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, but those numbers go up to 5.68 and 1.72 at night. The Cubs looked lifeless on Tuesday, but they likely shape up and win comfortably tonight.
