Diamondbacks vs Dodgers Pick for June 12th

By the way, in the time I wrote this column, the Spurs hit two more three pointers…OK, enough whining and sour grapes from me. I’ll lick my NBA pride wounds in tomorrow’s column (If any of you honestly envisioned this Heat team ever trailing by 34 points in a game, you are crazy). For today, let’s focus on a pair of baseball picks on “Getaway Day” in Major League Baseball.

Today’s Free Picks:

Arizona Diamondbacks +105 at Los Angeles Dodgers -115 (Total: 6.5)

Patrick Corbin (9-0, 1.98 ERA) vs. Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.72 ERA)

Here’s a great idea – discover the most exhilarating talent potentially since Bo Jackson? Let’s throw at his head!! Predictably, that action was taken with some umbrage by the Dodgers, who rushed the field and a brawl ensued resulting in six ejections. The same thing happened with Cole Hamels and Bryce Harper last year. Frankly, it’s getting a little stupid.

Alas, I am sure tonight’s game will have some of the lingering bad blood and tension from last night’s brawl, but the bigger story could very well be the starting pitching matchup between the perfect Patrick Corbin and new Korean sensation Hynu-Jin Ryu. It may not have the name recognition of a Justin Verlander vs. CC Sabathia matchup, but in the current moment, you can’t have a much better starting pitching duel. Both young left-handers have been dominant this season.

Corbin has been perfect and is in line to start the All Star game for the National League, but his Diamondbacks have been nearly as perfect against the Dodgers. They have won 16 of their past 20 matchups with the Dodgers and have a 9-0 pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA on the mound and are getting positive money on the line. I like it.

Free Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks to WIN +105

San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates

Barry Zito (4-4, 4.06 ERA) vs. Francisco Liriano (4-2, 1.75 ERA)

Liriano has flourished in his move to the national League this season, and has been a big reason why the Pirates continue to have one of the nest records in the National League despite an offense that ranks near the bottom of the league in nearly every statistical category.

Pittsburgh has been good at home, but more importantly, San Fran has been terrible on the road. Last night’s loss dropped them to 12-19 on the season. With Zito’s plus-4 ERA facing a red-hot Liriano, I’d give the edge to Pittsburgh tonight, and like the value of them on the runline at -110.

Free Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates -1.5 (-110)
