The battle of LA continues tonight with the Angels playing host to the Dodgers. This is game 1 of their date together. The Dodgers and Angels are similar in some respects. Of course they play in the same city, duh, but both of them are infamous for not being able to live up to expectations. Pre-season hype doesn’t do much when you can’t even make it pass the first round. And in the Angels case, a spot in the playoffs would sure be nice. For a team that has an MVP on their roster and a bat like Albert Pujols, one would think the Angels would have had a little more success. On one side of the underachievers and the other is the overachievers. I don’t even have to indicate where the Angels belong in that discussion. I’m going to put the Dodgers in the underachievers category as well. For the money that has been spent on this team, there needs to be better results. I will reserve my entire thoughts before we see what they end up doing this season. It’s hard to judge. There are so many teams that can win it this season that it makes it difficult to pick a World Series champion. I just think people are sick of the Dodgers choking when it comes to October, so people aren’t putting much confidence into them.
Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke are the catalyst of this team. They will go and fall with their postseason performances. Kershaw has had the chance in the past, but hasn’t been able to come up in big spots for the Dodgers in the playoffs. He seems like the kind of guy that nothing rattles him, so it does surprise me he hasn’t been able to be as effective as he’d like to be when it matters most. Greinke will get the call tonight, who has pitching as well as Kershaw has been in 2015. If you’re looking for an MLB pick, be sure to scroll down where you’ll find my pick.
L.A. Dodgers vs. L.A. Angels
Zack Greinke (15-3, 1.59 ERA) vs. Nicholas Tropeano (1-2, 5.51 ERA)
This is a series that the Dodgers have thoroughly have no problems taking care of the Angels in. The Dodgers have won six straight over the Angels in their meetings. The Angels will have an uphill battle to climb tonight against Greinke. Greinke is on another level and looking like he will get award a Cy Young when the season is done. If a 1.59 ERA isn’t enough, Greinke has a 1.69 ERA in his last three starts. In other words, he has been consistent as they come in baseball. Greinke also holds a small 0.70 WHIP in those three games.
The Angels will turn to Nicholas Tropeano to slow down Greinke and notably the Dodgers’ offense. There have been times where they look excellent, and others some work needs to be done. Tropeano has the privilege of pitching opposite the best pitcher in the game today. With only three starts under his belt this season, Tropeano had a 5.51 ERA in those starts. This is only his second year in the majors. In the four starts he had last season he finished with a 4.57 ERA. to me it looks like Tropeano is going to sit there and be the student, while Greinke dazzles you. In any case, I like the Dodgers tonight on a price that should be bigger in my opinion.
PICK: DODGERS -1.5 (-102)
