The Los Angeles Dodgers came out firing last night, eclipsing the St. Louis Cardinals and bringing them down to earth with a 9-7 win. The Cardinals made it interesting in the late stages of the contest, but Kenley Jansen who will be undergoing heart surgery in the offseason, held it down to give the Dodgers their 80th win of the season. They get closer to the Rockies with the win, but the Rox won as well, so they just maintained their spot 1.5 games behind.
They did get closer to the Cardinals for the final wildcard in the National League. The Dodgers are just a game behind the Cards and with a strong weekend, could see themselves ahead. If the postseason started today, the Dodgers would be the first team out in the National League. They’d have no NL West crown or wildcard to get a pass for October baseball.
The Dodgers had an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the 5th last night, so it nearly became a huge collapse. Throwing away a 7-run lead at this point in the season might have been an early dagger in the Dodgers’ season. It would have been awfully difficult for them to come out and play on Friday night after watching a 7-run lead disappear.
Dodgers’ fans got to sleep a little easier last night, though. Two of the best rookie pitchers in the majors will step into the spotlight tonight at Busch Stadium. The Dodgers will send out Walker Buehler, who has been good in his first season in the starting rotation. The Cards will counter with Jack Flaherty who has been up for the challenge as well this season. Each got their feet wet a year ago, but this is the first season they’ve been in the majors full-time. Head below for our free Dodgers vs. Cardinals pick for Friday night in the major leagues.
L.A. Dodgers vs. St. Louis Cardinals Pick
Walker Buehler (6-5, 3.09 ERA) vs. Jack Flaherty (8-6, 2.92 ERA)
The Dodgers may have almost choked away their lead yesterday, but it’s the second game in a row that the offense looked good. They put up 8 runs on the Reds in an 8-1 win and then 9 last night in St. Louis. It’s a good sign after a 3-1 loss against the Reds on the 11th. Walker Buehler enters with a solid 3.09 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He won a close one against the Cards on August 22nd at Dodger Stadium.
Buehler was strong in that outing, as he didn’t allow a run across 7 innings. He didn’t see similar results against the Rockies in his last outing, though. The Rockies got to Buehler for 6 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings. He looked good against the Cards back at home, but his numbers have been different on the road. Buehler has an ERA of 4.07 on the road compared to a 2.32 ERA at Dodger Stadium.
Jack Flaherty did a stand-up job against the Dodgers in his last appearances as well. He gave up only 1 hit, 1 run, and 2 walks. Flaherty fanned 10 hitters as well. In 21 at-bats, the Dodgers hit a measly 0.95 against Flaherty. The only guy that has had success is Joc Pederson who went deep for one of only two hits against him. Flaherty goes into Friday with an ERA of 2.88 and 1.03 WHIP at Busch Stadium in 2018. St. Louis have a good chance of responding tonight and getting a win back after the loss last night. The Cardinals are certainly worth a look as home dogs here.
