The Los Angeles Dodgers are in Chicago for their only regular season series against the Cubs. The series opener on Monday was postponed to Tuesday afternoon, while the evening game will be untouched. They waited until 10:00 Chicago time to fit the game in, but there was never a window. I’d actually be surprised if they get the early game going. Reports suggest an 80% chance of rain throughout the day, with clearing later overnight.
There could be a delay to the start of this one, but they will in all likelihood play. It’s disappointing that last night was rained out, as this is one of the most intriguing series this week. The Dodgers and Cubs attract plenty of attention, and both expect to make an impact in October. The Dodgers are just a season removed from going to the World Series, but of course ended up falling to the Houston Astros. Meanwhile, the Cubs won the World Series in 2016. The Dodgers beat the Cubs in the most recent NLCS to earn their ticket to the championship.
The Dodgers were mighty slow to start 2018. A hangover is a good way of describing their first two months of the year. It appears that the worst is behind them, though. They’ve finally stabilized and are playing like a contender. The D-Backs have maintained 1st place in the AL West, but the Dodgers are reeling them in, as they’re down only 1.5 games now.
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are both 7-3 in their last ten games, so the Dodgers keep treading water in that respect. It may be just a matter of time before they take control, though. Rich Hill is slated to get the start for the Dodgers in the late game, while the Cubs will counter with Mike Montgomery. Get our free Dodgers vs. Cubs pick below.
L.A. Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs Pick *Game 2
Rich Hill (1-2, 6.20 ERA) vs. Mike Montgomery (2-2, 3.31 ERA)
Rich Hill must get this act together or he may find himself out of the rotation soon. He’s had to deal with a blister issue that just won’t seem to go away. By the time it looks like Hill has solved the blister problem, another one pops up and he has to exit the contest. He has missed a month of action as he took care of another one, his last start coming on May 19th.
Hill threw just 2 pitches against the Nationals before he had to exit. It’s likely the root of his problem, as he’s been battered with an ERA of 6.20 in 24.2 innings. He was good the previous two seasons, posting ERA’s of 3.32 and 2.25. Hill hasn’t pitched this poorly since he was a member of the Indians’ bullpen in 2013. After that season, all he did is fight the blisters on his pitching hand.
Montgomery hopes to improve on an already impressive campaign. He enters with an ERA of 1.50 and 0.78 WHIP in his last three outings. Montgomery is only starting because of the Yu Darvish injury. Since taking over, he’s proceeding to allow just 3 runs in 4 starts. Additionally, in three of four games, he allowed just 2 hits. His history against the Dodgers is also pretty stellar, as the Dodgers have yielded a .185 batting average in 27 at-bats.
Darvish is returning soon, so if Montgomery has yet another flawless performance, it’s going to be tough to send him back to the bullpen. Either way, if he continues like this in the pen, Montgomery is going to make for a dangerous weapon late in the year. I’m going to look for him to keep rolling over the Dodgers, and make a play on the Cubs at Wrigley on Tuesday night in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
